Hi, Thank you for your post. Based on the description, I understand that: 1. The network topology in the environment is: homebuilt pc <--> the switch <--> Motorola 5120 cable modem other computers <--> netgear router <--> the switch vonage voip <--> the switch 2. The homebuilt pc cannot access the modem and the Internet if it is hooked up to the switch and you log onto Windows Vista. It works fine, however, if you log onto Windows XP. 3. The issue occurs if the computer is plugged directly into the modem and you log onto Windows Vista. 4. The issue does not occur if the computer is connected to the router, even though you log onto Windows Vista. Firstly, I suggest contacting Motorola to confirm if the cable modem is compatible with Windows Vista since the product is not listed in our Windows Vista Hardware Compatibility List website (http://winqual.microsoft.com/HCL/Default.aspx?m=v). Also, I checked it in Motorola website (http://broadband.motorola.com/consumers/products/sb5120/), there only mentions that the product is compatible with Windows XP. In addition, I would like to confirm if you use a dial-up to connect the Internet? If so, which network device is used to dial up? The issue may occur if the following conditions are true: 1. The environment is using a dialup connection. 2. The netgear router is the device being used to dial up. Hope it helps. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support

I am going crazy over here. Just got my new Dell with vista last night and setting it up. I have comcast motorola surfboard 5120 modem and downloads are horribly slow. I did a vista automatic update and also installed AVG virus scan and web toolbar to protect for phishing and viruses. Downloads (ie limewire) are horrible. Anything I can do?
