internet blocked through password protected gateway
I am living in a unit, where the internet goes through a common gateway. The gateway requires a username and password before you can browse the web. Under XP, when I open a browser (Firefox 3.0.7 or IE 7.0.5730.13) a dialog box pops up prompting me to enter my username and password. Then, I get access to the internet.Under Windows 7, both IE 8 and Firefox 2.0.0.4 just give me an error saying the destination is unreachable. I never get the dialog box pop up to allow me to enter my username and password, and so I am being blocked. I have checked all the settings I can think of, but with no luck.If anyone has any suggestions, that would be appreciated.

I would suspect a 'handshake' conflict. The type in use by your gateway may be one of the older protocols no longer supported by default in Win 7. Open IE, tools menu, options, advanced tab, and scroll to the bottom to put a checkmark in 'use SSL 2.0'Rating posts helps other users Mark L. Ferguson MS-MVP

Can you verify you are getting a valid IP address for the network in your unit? Click the start button and in the "search for programs and files" box type cmd and press enter. In the command window that opens type ipconfig and press enter.Notice the output the command returns. Looking for the connection that describes how you connect to your network. You will see something similar to Ethernet Adapter Local Connection if you connect using a network cable. Make note of the IP address and the address of the gateway. Next in the same command window type: ping [insert address of gateway] and press enter. Make sure you receive four successful replies. If you can not ping your gateway address or you do not have a valid local network address, you will not be able to access the Internet. If that works, next type ping [name of a website like yahoo.com] and press enter. Depending on the website you may get four replies or the ping command may timeout. Either way you should see the command return something like:pinging yahoo.com [68.180.206.184] with 32 bytes of data: What you are looking for in this case is the ability to resolve a name to it's IP address.Let us know how you make out

Thanks Mark, but I have already enabled SSL 2.0, with no luck. Thanks Ken, I have a couple of screenshots, but don't seem to be able to paste them into this reply. They just show that I can ping my gateway fine, but that I cannot ping my DNS servers or any external addresses. This is the case both in WinXP, which works fine, and Win7beta, which does not give me the dialog box asking for my username and password for external access.I am not sure why windows update works in Win7beta, yet I cannot access the internet. It seems like the windows update feature is bypassing the gateway's password. If that is the case, is the issue I am having tied to the http protocol maybe? I am sorry I cannot give you more details, but I can't find out what setup the gateway is using unfortunately.

Hi, Do you know the name and the used port of the gateway? If not, I suggest that you contact the server administrator and obtain the data. After you get the data, click Start, in the Start Search box type inetcpl.cpl and press Enter. Click on the tab Connections, click the button LAN settings. Only check the box Use a proxy server , enter the Address and Port. If the issue persists, please let us know if the computer is in a domain. Also let us know if ISA is used on the server side. Additionally, please upload contents after you enter ipconfig in your post. You may enter ipconfig /all > %userprofile%\Desktop\ipconfig.txt, and open the file ipconfig.txt on Desktop. Copy the contents and paste in your post. Arthur Xie - MSFT

I'm guessing Windows Update most likely works because your gateway is actually a proxy as well, with certain sites greenlighted to be allowed right through. I've recently installed Windows 7 on a test box and it doesn't work well with our proxy either. I'm guessing your proxy is linux based like ours,http://www.squid-cache.org/. I'll post again if I find out more.

@LPickardA bit off topic but..I too am having problems authenticating with a linux based proxy with Windows 7. In our case we are running Endian community version as an alternate gateway to the Internet. It verifies requests with our Win2K3 server AD for authorized users. For some reason Win7 doesn't seem to be passing the proper credentials to the the Endian firewall/Proxy server. And of course it works with XP :-)I would be intersted to know if you find away around your issue. Ken
