installing vmware failure

I have windows 8.1 with all latest updates, intel I7 4820 quad, 3.7 ghz, 32 gigabytes ddr5 ram.

I recently purchased the latest version of VMware, version 11.  Uninstalled version 6 which was working ok, but when I tried to install version 11 I got the error, "have detected a prior version of VMware, click below to uninstall." Doing so produced the error , "uninstall can not proceed, does not have the permissions to access folder" Checking showed the previous version had already been uninstalled, and no files were left in programs 86 folder, or in any other folder. After going through applications folders, local, roaming, etc I then went through the register to delete any entries that might have missed as is usual when uninstalling an application. I ran sfc/scannow several times, retrying to install the new version afterwards. The installer now starts to install and goes almost all the way before stopping with "warning 1909, cannot create shortcut virtual network editor.lnk Verify destination folder exists and that you can access it. Then another pops up   warning error 1909 "cannot create shortcut vmwork station.lnk Verify destination folder exists and that you can access it. Then "The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. the error code is 2902" I have downloaded the package 4 different times, all with the same error. And also tried different versions of the program with the same problem. This started out with permissions problems, and I have taken steps to cure those, and even contacted the program authors, and was told it is a Microsoft installer problem. Anyone out there ever ran into this one or similar problem and have any suggestions I haven't tried yet?  I was referred here from another Microsoft forum, and have another update. I have run "sfc /scannow" quite a few times now. Each time supposedly find a few corrupted files and corrected them. The original errors had to do with permissions, and after much searching, reading, and applying suggested solutions seemed to have taken care of the permission problem. Just reran "sfc" and now I have the permission problem back. I have done everything I can to correct it, but the installer still errors on "not enough permissions to access folders". I have downloaded the package 4 different times to preclude a corrupted download. Applied every suggestion received, and everything short of reinstalling window. I have many programs installed and most are paid applications that make it very difficult to reregister after reinstalling, especially without having to repay for the application when doing so. So reinstalling windows would be a last resort. Any help would be appreciated. I have used "take ownership", changed permissions on almost every folder on my computer that is involved with the windows OS, etc.

I think the first thing to do is revert all changes you made so far. Use the steps described in 'restore your system to an earlier pint in time' to restore to the point where you uninstalled VMware 6.

Follow the steps describe in this VMware article to clean up the possible remainders of your installation and try the installation of the newer version again.

If it does not work, I would not recommend changing settings if you do not know they will actually help resolve the issue and get support from VMware. After all they developed the software and the installers and know best about all of its specifics.

I did that before I tried anything else. And came up with the error "uninstalled failed. Sign in as administrator or contact.....etc" I am the administrator and signed in as such. At that time only had the one account, and created the second administrator account later at one of the suggestions I received. In the end I had to manually uninstall the program as nothing else would do it and the new version would not install until the old version was gone. I then began getting the above errors. I just reran "sfc /scannow" and am now getting the message of not enough permissions. I have tried every suggestion and remedy possible and still get the permissions error. Almost every folder in the windows folder and their sub-folders have been given full, complete permissions, and both administrator accounts too. Short of a complete fresh reinstall of windows I see no way of correcting this. It is sad that there is so many problems with the permissions for administrator accounts. Thank you, anyway.

Jara, when running the sfc /scannow did you open the command prompt as administrator? Not just signed in as administrator, but right click the cmd icon and clicking on "run as administrator"? If you did and it opened then you shouldn't have any permission errors.

Yes, I always use command prompt with run as administrator, it's a hassle to have to go to the tiles and go through all the applications until I get to the windows section. I pinned command prompt to the task bar after I right clicked it and selected run as administrator but that attribute evidently is forbidden to the task bar, because I cannot right click it to select run as administrator from the task bar, and it did not keep it when I pinned it to the task bar. I work with Linux and android files and use command prompt quite often. Believe me, I have tried everything I can dig up about permissions, and followed almost every suggestion presented to me regardless how inane or silly some might seem at the time. I'm no expert and never claimed to be, though, I have been in electronics for more than 50 years having started in the mid 50's. Even followed Gates and Jobs when they first started out, but , still know only enough to get me in trouble (quite often too!). I have never had so many problems with permissions before. Maybe I'm missing something somewhere, because I'm definitely doing something wrong! Thanks again.

John

ps: I ran Processmonitor recently while trying to install VMware package, searched for "access denied", and found the entries with the errors in my first post. I must get the help file fixed since it also doesn't work, in order to understand how to use and interpret it. I could see nothing to explain what the cause is that prevents the needed access. I also empty the temp folder in windows and application data, local, temp folder, after trying remedies and before trying to install again.

Hi jara8fg:

Please run the following tool and then have a check:
Fix problems that programs cannot be installed or uninstalled
http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall

According to the error messages ,it seems that we haven`t uninstalled it completely. It is recommended to look for help from the vmware developer for help .They may have more resources to resolve this issue .

If you want to use the vitual machine ,as an alternative choice we can try to use the Hyper-v feature included in Windows 8.1 .To use the Hyper-v feature ,here is a link for reference :

I installed hyper-v with no problem, but that does nothing to help with the VMware problem. I checked through the program folders, and searched the registry for any trace of the older program with zero results. So the older program was completely removed. The errors now occurring are failure to create links to virtual network editor and VMware workstation. And the ever present permissions error steaming from the 2 previous errors. Thanks for your help, if I could determine what is causing the access denied I would be a happy camper. The VMware workstation package cost me $276.00 and I would like to be able to use it in my win 8.1.

Hi John,

" The errors now occurring are failure to create links to virtual network editor and VMware workstation. And the ever present permissions error steaming from the 2 previous errors. "

So the vmware software has been installed and we get an issue to use it or it still cannot be installed ?
What are the exact error messages of the present issue ?

We can create a new administrator account and run the installation as an administrator to install it to have a check .If there is a antivirus software installed ,please turn it off temporarily to have a check .

It is also recommended to look for help from the VMware forum for help .

Best regards

MeipoXu;

No, the VMware package will not install, the error messages are:

"warning 1909, cannot create shortcut virtual network editor.lnk Verify destination folder exists and that you can access it." and: " warning error 1909 "cannot create shortcut vmwork station.lnk Verify destination folder exists and that you can access it. Then "The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. the error code is 2902"

Have already created another administrator account with all privileges, and same results when trying to install VMware. Package was redownloaded 4 times in case of corrupted package, I even used the same package and installed it on "windows 10 preview" where it works fine (but this is temporary until win 10 is officially released). All folders and files involved have been given full permissions, used "take ownership" also on everything involved. Used the tool you suggested previously, it found nothing wrong and exited with no corrections performed. Other than reinstalling windows 8.1 with full fresh install, I see no answer to this. I do not want to do that as I have too many applications installed that I have paid for. Every time I do reinstall windows(in the past) I lose some of these applications because the authors want me to repurchase the application in order to get another activation code.

I also have been posting on the VMware site the same as I have here. Their official view of this is it is a windows installer problem and not VMware caused. The people there have also been trying to help me as best as they can. I appreciate both sites and the people on each that have tried to help.

I have windows defender only installed and deactivate it each time I try to install the package. I'm stumped!

One word forward, when I come across a problem I use Google (internet searching) all forums from companies involved and any other sources that might possibly be helpful. If all these do not produce any answer, then and only then will I open a post on involved web sites asking for help. I don't post all these efforts as it would take up too much space on the forum, so please bear with me on this.

Hi jara8fg,

I noticed you have posted a case in the VMware forum and you have used the process monitor to troubleshoot this issue .
https://communities.vmware.com/thread/502533

Have you got the path information of shortcut virtual network editor.lnk (what is the exact information you have got related to this issue) ?
If we have got the path information ,we can try to take ownership of the path to have a check .We also can make it with the icacls command to check and take ownership.

Have you tried to change the installation path to have a check ?

Please check the following link and try Pylot`s suggestion`s to have a check .

Hi MeipoXu;

Thank you for your help and suggestions. In answer, I have used take ownership on almost every folder in Programs and Program data folders. And in every folder involved so many times I lost count (as well as files too), and it never did any good. I changed installation paths too, to no good. The installer still accesses the start menu folder for all installations. I tried Pylot's suggestion, it worked to a point, I could save the folder (from program data only, not x86 or program folder), I could never enter the activation code, it would not accept one, and running it as trial, it would not load or run a vm machine. Win 8.1 would not work on his suggestion. I checked the path of the error which led to VMware folder in start menu. I used take ownership on the Microsoft folder, as it is supposed to change permissions in all sub folders and files. Still the same results, so being tired of getting nowhere just for pits I went all the way to the VMware folder in start menu used take ownership, no go, so I backed out of the folder and used take ownership in each folder as I backed out completely. I then tried to install VMware, it went to the same place where it failed before and gave me a different error code 3612 or something similar for each link. It hung there not backing out or doing anything, figured I would have to exit through task manager, but after 2 minutes the installation proceeded and fully installed the program! What the errors it gave meant I have no idea. Wanted to explain fully the steps I went through, might help someone else. Hyper-v is totally useless for trying to use for me. Can't access usb dongles or anything else for that matter that is not part of the computer. They haven't added that capability yet. I am an amateur radio operator, design, build and test my own equipment. Wanted to use Gnuradio under Linux, as it's capabilities are almost endless. So thanks again, I'm a happy camper now!
