incorrect User name Lync 2010 client

I have installed Lync 2010, entered a sign-in address and User name / Password however, I typed in the wrong username.

I get the error "Cannot sign in to Lync because the sign-in address was not found"

I can find no way of displaying the option to change my User name or password with this particular sign-in address.

If I change the sign-in address I am prompted for a User name / Password but I cannot see how I can change these credentials on an existing sign-in address.

I have tried uninstalling, cleaning up the registry and deleting .cache / sip files in my local settings but when I reinstall it remembers the old sign-in address and once again no prompt for domain credentials.

Can anyone help?

Exit from Lync.  Not logout, exit.

Delete C:\Users\[Your User Name]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Communicator folder and start Lync again.

Thank you.

That path is not valid for Windows XP however I have stopped Lync, cleared out the following directories and restarted but still does not work

C:\Documents and Settings\<user ID>\Application Data\Microsoft\Communicator
C:\Documents and Settings\<user ID>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Communicator

Sorry, I did not know you had an XP machibe, but you are right.  This is the same path.

Why don't you go to Tools, Options and change sign-in address right there?

Thank you.

I dont want to change my sign-in address but I do want to change my domain credentials (User name / password)

If I use a new sign-in address I am prompted to enter my domain credentials but cannot find a way to change my original mistake ....

It works like this:

  • You enter the new sign-in addres and click sign in.
  • After that it will ask you for a password.
  • After that, it will fail and offer you to enter domain/username information.

I've done it many time and it always works like this. Never tried it on XP.  Maybe XP is different?  Not sure.

Thank you.

Hi,

For example, user A has been signed in Lync successfully before. Now, you want to change User name and password of user A. However, it sign in directly. There is no input box that allows to change domain credentials. If i have misunderstood your question, please clarify for me.

Since the sip address of user A can sign in directly, it indicated the domain credentials is correct. Why you need to change it?

If the domain credentials is incorrect, it would fails to sign in Lync and the input box of domain credentials should appear. I have tested it on my Windows 7 machine. If I typed a wrong password, the input box of User name and Password appeared immediately.

If you have any further question, please tell us you version of Lync client.

I believe none of the participants in the conversation here on this post really understood what danreeve77 was really asking. I had the same problem as he does/did. Lync 2010 client really asks you for just the email address and the password of the user as it assumes that autodiscover is in place or you login to Office 365 . Ideally if using Office365 or any other Lync server that uses autodiscover, this would be fine but if you want to login to a corporate AD domain network that doesn't have this setup, this won't be enough. So your login will fail once or twice and will bring up with a field that you can actually input your username in the domain\user format. However if you mistype any of the information you are back to the screen where you could only change the email address or the password. This is really really painful and a great flaw in the product in my opinion. I found a solution today. I want to make Lync client go to the detailed field with the username anytime i want. The solution lies in clearing the cached credentials Lync uses.

Open Command Prompt

Type rundll32.exe keymgr.dll, KRShowKeyMgr

This will bring the Stored User Names and Passwords window where you can find all your cached Windows credentials. Find the one responsible for Lync and Remove it. Should be "Microsoft OC1:url". Close Lync client and re-open ( Close it by Exit, not with the X ). Now if you type your email again and any password it will give you the detailed menu again where you can type your domain\username properly.

Hope it sheds some light on the problem.

The above did not totally resolve my issue.

On Windows 7

1.  Delete C:\Users\jkinneberg\appdata\Roaming\Microsoft\Communicator

2. Delete C:\Users\jkinneberg\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Communicator

3. Delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Communicator

4. Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Communicator

5. Delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared\UcClient

6.  Run rundll32.exe keymgr.dll, KRShowKeyMgr

7.  From Step 6 delete all the credentials associated with the Lync account.  Not just the one starting with Microsoft OC1:url"

This will remove all Lync configuration that I have been able to determine and will provide you with a new sign-on box.  Which after the first failed attempt will allow you to put in a user name on the second authentication.
