Your regular user account has been corrupted. Create a new user account for yourself and log into it. Then use Windows Explorer (My Computer) to navigate to the old user account's data files. Copy the data to the appropriate folders (My Documents, My Pictures, etc.) in the new user account. When you are sure you have everything you need, delete the old corrupted user account from Control Panel>User Accounts. If the temporary profile will not allow you to create a new user account, log into the built-in Administrator account to do this work. In XP Home, boot the computer into Safe Mode. Do this by repeatedly tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up. This will get you to the right menu. Navigate using your Up arrow key; the mouse will not work here. Once in Safe Mode, you will see the normally hidden Administrator account. The default password is a blank. In XP Pro, you do not need to go into Safe Mode. At the Welcome Screen, do Ctrl-Alt-Del twice to get the classic Windows logon box. Type in "Administrator" and whatever password you assigned when you set up Windows. User accounts can become corrupted by viruses/malware or by hardware issues so it is good practice to make sure the computer is clean and to make sure the hardware (particularly the hard drive and RAM) is sound. http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Hardware_Tshoot MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
