iPhone .mov videos crash windows explorer

I use OneDrive on my iPhone 5s to back up my photos and videos. When I try to view the videos on my Dell XPS Windows 8.1 machine, I run into trouble.

When I use Windows Live Photo Gallery, it crashes whenever I try to view one of the videos. If I open the camera roll folder in windows explorer it crashes when creating the thumbnails. I also tried using the modern UI photo viewer. It crashes as well when opening the thumbnails. I tried using VLC. It does not play them either. There seems to be quite a few other people experiencing this issue.

I tried uninstalling some updates as mentioned here: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/7ca111ff-8978-4794-945c-5f36edb91786/videos-imported-from-iphone-4s-crashing-explorer-media-player-quicktime?forum=w8itproappcompat and here:

I've also played one of these videos on my Surface Pro 3. It crashed Windows Media Player and would not play due to an error when I tried to play it on the web from OneDrive.com

Hi Daryl Sensenig,

Thanks for your feedback about this issue.

Unfortunately till now we could not make it for sure when will have the issue mentioned fixed.

Many users have reported that this issue related to Windows update KB2975719 and KB2995388, we may temporary hide them, and wait for the new update.

Since this issue caused by third party format file, we also suggest you follow with if there is any patch released from Apple.

I rather doubt that Apple will release a patch that fixes a Windows crash for videos shot in the past with my iPhone. How is that even

Hi Daryl,

I understand your confusion about this. since MOV is third party format file which is supported by Apple Quick Time, we cannot make sure that Microsoft will release any patch to fix this issue.

However, Still I will inform you at first time if we find any official solution from Microsoft.

Thanks for your cooperation and understanding.

That is a truly feeble excuse. It's a known issue, you don't just leave it, you patch your own code to stop crashing, even if it means it cannot render thumbnails etc. for the particular file you claim is causing issues. It means that it's more or less totally unusable when you browse directories which contain effected subdirectories.

It's this sort of crap that makes people switch to *other* operating systems, man up MS.
