iOS Microsoft Remote Desktop app not able to connect to PC

Hi,

I have an ipad 4 running latest ios and a pc running windows 8.1.

I installed the remote desktop app on my iPad from app store.

I installed the remote desktop app on my PC from windows store.

I allowed 'remote desktop' in my settings.

I made sure windows firewall is allowing remote desktop.

I have tried to connect to my PC from my ipad using:

computer name only (prompt for user & password)

computer name + credentials

IP name only (prompt for credentials)

IP + credentials

I always get the message that it is unable to connect to the computer.

I have FileBrowser app (Stratospherix) setup and it worked easily first time no problem.  There is no desktop sharing with this app which is why I want Remote Desktop.  I have tried closing FileBrowser to make sure it was not interfering and that did not help.

One area where I've investigated that I see as "potentially" the problem is that "Remote Desktop" is allowed through the Windows firewall but there is a field for "Windows Remote Managment" that is not allowed and I'm wondering if that is related but I don't want to allow it and create an unnecessary security risk..

This thread is posted in virtualization, are you trying to connect to a Hyper-V host? How is network setup in Hyper-V host?

Why did you download Remote Desktop App for Windows? This has nothing to do with you connecting to your computer from your iPad. Is your computer connected with cable or is it wireless? Are you connected to same subnet?

If you are running Windows 8.1 right click computer and choose properties. Click Remote Settings, is "allow remote connections to this computer" chosen?

what the exact error message you got?

everything normal before?

what version of Windows 8.1 at client side? Windows 8.1 pro, enterprise? (just for double check)

which version remote desktop for IOS that you are using? this is the latest

did you able to see sign in screen on remote PC?

you should use setting "allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication (recommended)" if this is office environment to protect PC from malware

please check this document for complete information and share what the update (including what you have done, update error, and some information that related to this issue)

Hi, I guess I did not realize where I was posting it.  I was redirected to this forum from here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-networking/ios-microsoft-remote-desktop-app-not-able-to/86c4a730-b97d-4258-9bb0-6977259a5170

Where should I post it.

I downloaded Remote Desktop App for Windows because in the instructions for the iOS app it tells you to install the Remote Desktop Client on the PC.  Is this wrong?

My computer is connected by wireless router.

I do not know exactly what you mean by the same subnet but I assume it is I have been trying to connect simply from within the house to get it working, not from a different network.

Allow Remote Connections is chosen.  I also have tried disabling the "require network level authentification" box which was checked, but that does not correct the problem.

The exact error is "we couldn't connect to the remote PC.  Make sure the PC is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled.  If this keeps happening, ask your admin or tech support for help."

Everything is normal except the Remote Desktop app cannot connect.  I have no connectivity problems with either device.  FileBrowser app works fine as well.

I am running the latest version of the app.

I did not see a sign in screen on the PC.

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro.

I do see the "allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with NLA"

I have tried unchecking this box but it does correct the problem.

so the problem already solved?

if not try to use other 3rd party remote software, I used teamviewer to remote my windows PC using Ipad and don't have problems, maybe you can try using this software to isolate 3rd party software issue

you can also try to do clean boot in client PC and disable firewall and security software to check

I am sorry, that was bad typing, unchecking the box does not correct the problem.

Also, possibly a related issue is that I tried to use my ipad as a hotspot (yes I have this feature from Verizon) and my PC does not even see the hotspot in its available wifi networks... I am going to try to run some anti-malware programs and possibly do some system restore... I have a feeling maybe that is where it is... who knows..

Hello rltrdcnova,

If my understanding is right, the two devices IPAD and windows 8.1 computer connect to the same router.

Please check if the two devices are in the same subnet.
For more information about subnet IP address please refer to the following article.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc958832.aspx

Please check if we can use other Windows 8.1 with Microsoft Remote Desktop app to connect to your computer.
If we can, we can pay attention to the IPAD settings.

Best regards,
Fangzhou CHEN

You might want to investigate apps like TurboMeeting from http://www.RHUBcom.com/ which navigate firewalls without special settings.  The TurboMeeting app does require a GoMeetNow, GoSupportNow or TurboMeeting account.
