You can't use a personal email account (MSN/Gmail/etc..) to sign into the Lync client. You can purchase an account from Lync Online: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/lync/lync-online-overview-and-features-online-meetings-and-instant-messaging-FX103789571.aspx or if your corporation has deployed a Lync Server.

Hi Matthew Panks,

Lync user can communicate with Skype user, and vice versa.

To use Lync,  you have to purchase Office365 subscription or theres an on-premises Lync Server 2010/2013 deployment at your corporate office for it to work.

Best regards,

Eric

On-premise Lync Server 201x requires the setup of a federated Lync Edge server with appropriate public DNS A and SRV records on top of certificates to enable communications with federated partners, Office 365 and PIC providers (Yahoo, Skype/MSN, etc.).
