The Windows Encrypting File System (EFS), which is available only for XP Pro and not for XP Home (and then only if your disk is formatted using NTFS), is extremely dangerous to use if you don't understand it fully. Before encrypting anything using Windows EFS, read Best practices for the Encrypting File System , andFOLLOW THE RECOMMENDATIONS.In general, NTFS uses "permissions" rather than "passwords" to control access to data on the hard drive. Ensure that your user account (the name that you use to log onto Windows) has a password, then open Help and Support and type "make your folders private" into the search box.If you must use passwords, a far safer (but, admittedly, less secure) way is to put the files in a zipped (compressed) folder, then add a password to that folder. In Help and Support, enter "Protect zipped files" for directions.
