In Windows Vista, installing hardware drivers requires administrator privilege. You have to follow the steps below on one of the Windows Vista systems to edit the policy to allow standard user accounts to install hardware drivers and apply this policy to all Windows Vista clients in the domain. Please click Start, in the Start Search box type "gpedit.msc" and press Enter. Locate to "Computer configuration"->"Driver installation"->"Allow non-administrators to install drivers for these device setup" classes, double-click it. Select Enable, click Show, then click Add, enter the class ID {4D36E979-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. (brackets included.). You may create such a GPO and link it to the OU that contains your Windows Vista computers.

Please create the object in "gpedit.msc" first.

Actually, on Vista the path is: Local Computer Policy>Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates>System>Driver Installation>Allow Standard Users to Install Drivers For Devices from Specified Setup Classes Though some pages refer to the last folder as Device Installation, on my Vista Enterprise system it's Driver Installation. There's also a Technet page for the policy here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc770453.aspx I'll tell you, I tried to make this work in our environment for days with no luck. The more you look into the device setup classes, the more classes you find ( I found at least 4 printer classes on the MSDN site) and even once I enabled the policy and set the classes a standard user still couldn't install a network printer. Now that could be due to our network configuration and the location of the queues, I'm not sure. I tried disabling the "Point and Print Restrictions" policy (http://blogs.technet.com/askperf/archive/2007/05/04/windows-vista-point-print.aspx), which seems to have allowed standard users to install network printers, but we've only had about a 85% success rate with this.

It's real irritating that Microsoft pushes out these OS's and has all these problems. Then they hardly even work to fix these issues! What is wrong with Microsoft? dont push something that isnt ready for the field! I heave read like 1000 papers on making windows 7 print as domain users, and no success without making the users local admins on their machines. Not a good idea, but as long as it works...fine! But poo on you Microsoft for this! This is BS! Come on!
