Thanks for asking this question for I need an answer too. I was able to network with XP machines easily with the beta release. Now it seems 7RC wants to see other 7 machines only. TIA 36zeker

For an XP machine to see a Vista/Windows 7 machine the Xp machine must have Link Layer Topology Discovery installed which is supposed to be in Service Pack 3 for XP but for some reason either isn't or doesn't install properly. You can downlaod the topology discovery fix from Microsoft but it must be installed after service pack 2 but before service pack 3(if service pack 3 is already installed it will say this patch isn't applicable as it comes with the service pack, but it doesn't) this may not make the XP computers immediately visible but should still be accessable by entering \\ComputerName in the address bar of Windows Explorer or Network Places.

In my case, my windows 7 RC machine sees my other PC only as a media device (running XP MCE 2005 SP3) on the local network and can play its music and media files, but can't access the XP machines shared files directly for reading/copying. It cannot see the shared Canon USB printer attached to the XP machine. Not very user friendly. Windows 7 needs better networking with XP machines. I need to print and share files with the XP machines. OTOH, the XP machine can see the shared (public) files and printer on the windows 7 RC machine.

If you are trying to network with an XP system and cannot, odds are that the Windows 7 system is still in a HomeGroup. Check HomeGroup in Windows 7 and it will tell you if you are indeed in a HomeGroup. If you want to network with XP you'll have to take Windows 7 out of the HomeGroup.GA P35 DQ6 Mb, Intel Wolfdale 8600 3.33Ghz C2D CPU., 4x2Gb Mushkin DDR2 1066 PC2 8500 Ascents Memory Mods., PNY-nVidia GE Force 8800 GTS (640MB), 4-Western Digital Caviar SATA(2) HDD's (internal), 1 EIDE-USB External; Hauppauge PVR 1600 TV tuner, Dual Monitor: (1) Standard up top, (1) WideScreen below; Altec Lansign Speakers...

Thanks to everyone. Still no joy with the network. I'm off to scour other forums for a resolution, before this evolves into one of life's biggest mysteries.Incidently, I just wanted to mention that I'm hard wired with a Dlink router and windows firewall on all machines. Thanks, I'll post back when I know something.

Windows XP and Vista default to workgroup, Windows 7 defaults to homegroup. You need to ensure that the network group name matches on both ends or they won't connect.

You may need to install this on your Windows XP machines before they will work well networking with Windows 7 machines.
