A wired connection will typically transfer data faster than a wireless connection, but that shouldn't make a difference unless you regularly transfer large amounts of data between the computers. An Ethernet cable can be up to 328 feet long. A 20-foot cable won't slow anything down unless the cable is defective.Boulder Computer Maven Microsoft Most Valuable Professional

I would recommend using the cable to connect the two computers together. The router should not slow down the connection, there may be another problem.Typically a home network is created by connecting stationary(desktop) computers by cable, and mobile (laptop) computers wirelessly. The router is used as a central connection point, and the router is usually connected to an internet connection. It sounds like you have two desktop computers, so I would recommend the ethernet cable, which as Steve said is faster than wireless and can be over 300 feet long. If I helped let me know!
