home networking
I have 2 systems running Vista Business. They share a gig slpitter on my home network (wired).primary sees the other, named first, fine on the network and shares files properly. first, however, shows the computer named primary in network but that's as far as it goes. shen i click on the primary icon on first's network window i get a network error box saying 'windows cannot access \\primarycheck the spelling of the name. otherwise there may be a problem with your network ... click diagnose'. when diagnose is clicked it goes off to ponder it's navel for a while and comes back with 'windows found a problem that can not be repaired automaticaly. contact your isp or netwirk admin ....' i am the admin, chief cook and bottle washer and i don't have a clue why one system plays well and the other, identical system won't play nice with others any ideas greatfully accepted since this regular partner is out of ideas and ms nolonger uses the phone to help anyone.

It looks as if the issue you faced is: 1. There are 2 Vista Business machines in this environment, one is named primary, the other is first 2. Primary can connect to first properly, but first fails to connect primary via the Network folder. Then, have you tried to access primary via UNC path directly? 1. Go into command prompt (cmd.exe) 2. Type the following command:net use \\<ip address of primary>\<the shared folder> 3. Please mark down the entire error message if it failed. Also, please ensurethat you have turned on "FireSharing" on primary. What does "gig slpitter" mean, by the way?

Thank you for your information. I would like to further confirm the following information: 1. Is it successful if you ping primary from first? (Please use the IP address and computer name to try. Let me know the response, such as the IP address it resolved.) 2. Based on the post, you mentioned //primary/c: (a shared folder) returns the cannot communicate with primary and the url of primary. Does it mean you type the command, net use \\parimary\c:, on the test instead of \\<ip address>\<shared folder>? What if you type the command, net use \\<ip address of primary>\<shared folder>? 3. Is the share folder named c:? However, based on my experience, share folder name cannot contain the character : Additionally, I would like to check the IP configuration in these computers. Please follow these steps on both computers (primary and first): 1. Go to command prompt (cmd.exe) 2. Run the following command:ipconfig /all > ipconfig.txt 3. Type:ipconfig.txt 4. Copy and paste the files content for me. Above information are very important for us to narrow down/resolve the issue, please reply them more detail.
