so should i uninstall the malwarebytes then reinstall fm website as you suggested? I do run it often and thought it auto updates during the scann, howver 2 error msgs always appear during the scann (was 3 so something got rid of one). FYI have other scann programs that are set to auto scan 1 or 2x wk. I also run disk clean up often. they were installed by trusted IT professionals not by me. freed up ALOT of space Please answer soon cus this ctrl/ alt/ delete is makin' me crazy thanks jacqueline gavin

It sounds as if your current install is corrupted. Yes you should uninstall and reinstall with a fresh download. The free version doesn't auto-update in the background - you should always manually update it before running a scan (what it the update version in the current install?) Your Anti-Virus is AVG v8.5? That has been out of date for the past 4 years! I suspect that your machine is irretrievably infested with malware. You should back up your data to external media, and then reformat and reinstall using the manufacturer's Recovery media - if you are unable/unwilling to do this, then I suggest you take the machine to a small repair shop, and ask them to do it for you. well that sounds really bad! just to be clear, i have to put everything onto my DVD's? like my adobe CS all my programs, font files, etc. plus my own files? I have been moving my graphic deg.files for my portfolio onto the DVD's (kodak DVD+R DL double layer 8.5/240 min) and have a stack of them. Those are the only ones i have at the moment. I had a 2yr warranty ($300) from the local computer store, but they went MIA a while ago...warranty good through Dec '12. Im sharing this because i'm in a serious financial crisis (not by choice) and think this is beyond my ability. I'm also thinkin' this laptop is got a DNR on it...when i was let go of job i had for 11yr my IT guy from my former job gave it to me. I do have a reliable guy that i know who owns his own shop and is expert. However taking it to him would mean a cost i cant cover. So if it's something i could do, i will, but if it entails the requirements i listed above, then i will have to. In closing, there's no "bandaid" repair i could do just to get me through responding to available jobs in my field...like the 3 pending i have now. Thanks once again (you and microsoft support team ROCK!)...you have been patient and very helpful...im sure you're frustrated w/all i'm throwing at you ("just the facts, mam, just the facts") and do consider your reply to this email as a final. jackie jacqueline gavin

so i guess there's no chance you can go in remotely (against policy i'm sure) i wish you could anyway control pannel/prog and feat/security esentials list all are on: firewall Auto updating (on you suggested not to have auto updating right?) malware protection other sec settings PANEL AT LEFT LIST: WINDOWS UPDATE WINDOWS FIREWAL WINDOWS DEFENDER (cannot bring this up to turn on...tried this often, just wont open!) INTERNET OPTIONS in Programs and Features/uninstall or change prog AVG Free 8.5 (i ws about to update this as u suggested but then my IT colleague interviened w/the malware updating and havent got a chance since! i started to uninstall outdated AVG and reinstall update but there's 2 options before uninstall: remove user settings & including objects in virus vault. should i check both of those i did see mbam listed somewhere in prog and feat. should i just go ahead and install MSE as suggested in ur last email? i just don't have the smarts for this stuff and understand if you want to quit me...i wanna quit me! I just think im making it more difficult for you to deal w/issue...im so clueless, but i have been trying. in my defense, I'm off the charts in creative writing, acomplished fine artist and mad skills (self taught) in all 3 Adobe CS prog. If AVG8.5 is still installed (i.e. still appears in Programs and features)you MUST uninstall it and run the AVG Remover - choose the option to remove all settings. This should remove all traces of it - you can then install MSE, update it, and run a full system scan. Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth

i think i lost ya at "click on start" im kidding, but it did take me awhile. BELOW is what i kept getting (btw some of the prompts u mention didn't come up and i did this a fewbillion times (hence file not found) keep going...look what freakishly appeared on the notepads on my desktop. I hope some of this is what you needed...tho i think the "x86" info is incomplete. If so i could go back and just do that one. must get back to my non-computer multi-tasking :-) Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6002] Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. I can see no signs of any Anti-Virus installed in that listing. Is there any such installed? If not, please install MSE from the link I posted earlier - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/products/security-essentials and run a full system scan I also don't see MBAM installed? HELP! turns out the trial version of AVG 2012 i downloaded is constantly sending "buy now pop ups" (trial ends in 28 days). I mentioned the site said download AVG free...that was a ruse...appreciate if you could direct me where i find the FREE AVG download cuz ill have to uninstall this soon the pop ups are driving me crazy. thanks...btw should i be responding to the green arrows (points) to the left of these msgs? i just noticed them? hi Noel! It took awhile but i installed MSE,etc. I uninstalled AVG8.5 reinstalled the 2012 version...i clicked on free download, but think i got the free trial version instead (why do they do that!)...okay for now, i'll figure it out later bef it expires. yes ran scans..."Real Time" would not let me uncheck it...i tried a few times...no luck. After i did the above i couldn't get back on internet...then i remembered there ws brief interrupt in the cable...they refreshed the signal and here i am back on. I haven't had a chance to get back to job search, etc. but will let u know if was successful. If not im sure it ws something i forgot or skipped...alot of steps to do. If you want me to do that CP again so you can see if i did ok, lemme know. Thanks again infinity :-) jacqueline gavin

so i guess there's no chance you can go in remotely (against policy i'm sure) i wish you could anyway control pannel/prog and feat/security esentials list all are on: firewall Auto updating (on you suggested not to have auto updating right?) malware protection other sec settings PANEL AT LEFT LIST: WINDOWS UPDATE WINDOWS FIREWAL WINDOWS DEFENDER (cannot bring this up to turn on...tried this often, just wont open!) INTERNET OPTIONS in Programs and Features/uninstall or change prog AVG Free 8.5 (i ws about to update this as u suggested but then my IT colleague interviened w/the malware updating and havent got a chance since! i started to uninstall outdated AVG and reinstall update but there's 2 options before uninstall: remove user settings & including objects in virus vault. should i check both of those i did see mbam listed somewhere in prog and feat. should i just go ahead and install MSE as suggested in ur last email? i just don't have the smarts for this stuff and understand if you want to quit me...i wanna quit me! I just think im making it more difficult for you to deal w/issue...im so clueless, but i have been trying. in my defense, I'm off the charts in creative writing, acomplished fine artist and mad skills (self taught) in all 3 Adobe CS prog. I had to add that in cuz i feel like such a failure and you've been so patient. jacqueline gavin

Thanks again infinity :-) jacqueline gavin That's because you downloaded and installed the Trial version, rather than the Free version :) Why are you installing that anyhow- after I've spent some time telling you to install MSE?? You CANNOT install and run two AV's at the same time I NEVER said to reinstall AVG - I consider it to be a bloated and over-controlling piece of software since they 'upgraded' v9. Now you're going to have to uninstall AVG again before you can reliably uninstall MSE so that you can (if you insist) reinstall AVG again. YOU ARE ABSOULUTELY RIGHT! I screwed up!...i'm in no position to INSIIST on anything...i misunderstood :-(( I am embarrassed to reveal that i have a learning issue that mushrooms w/any subject like this...im sure you feel this has been a waste of your time...i don't blame you...and probably think i'm stupid which is fine cuz i've lived with that all my life. So moving forward...i will uninstall the AVG and keep the MSE installed. and that should be that. sorry jacqueline gavin

Hi Noel...just wanted to let you know my laptop is back to it's near normal self thanks to you. I wanted to "test" it out make sure the virus issue was resolved before reporting results. So far so good! again, "thanks infinity" for helping me through this...i appreciate you answering my desperate plea and taking time out of your busy schedule to walk me through the necessary steps and provide instruction that (eventually) resulted in a successful outcome. It's comforting to know i can turn to the staff at tech support and get the help i need. However, I hope it will be a long time before i have to do so again. jackie :-)jacqueline gavin

No problem - and there's been no MS staff involved in this thread (except to mark my last post as an answer<g>) MCC's are volunteers (unpaid!) who help out where MS staff can't help for whatever reason - in your case, they aren't allowed to recommend 3rd-party software for malware-cleaning/prevention because of comany policy, and you're strictly in the wrong forums anyhow. If you have any more problems or queries, you should post in the more appropriate Windows Answers forums here.... http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsNoel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth

what i meant ws help i have rec'd in the past from techs at this site...i am well aware the assist on this ws all u...as i am well aware of your position and obvious expertise. btw if i knew i ws in the wrong site, i wouldve gone over to the "appropriate" one (you mention above) in the beginning...ya learn somethin' new everyday (though i do know what volunteer means (LOL!)...I have been one for many years in a variety of areas). Actually volunteer has a deeper, spiritual meaning. Because it's genuine, selfless act, it's the most devine way of honoring the universe while here on earth's plane. bfn jacqueline gavin
