Hi,1. What applications are you trying to remove?2. What exactly is the issue?3. Are you able to boot into normal mode?4. Are those applications causing any issue? If yes what issue?Regards,Manasa P – Microsoft Support.

Thanks for answering. The main ap that causes nag warnings when I go to web sites, even Hotmail, is the one I'm calling Defender, the red shield. sometimes it's in the tray sometimes not. The nags are annoying. However anything can be put into tray w/o permission or even asking. Ie I recently used my new Seagate portable drive to transfer apps to a new laptop. The drive has built in apps that auto install in both computers that nag repeatedly, 2 were in the tray and 2 others in the Start menu. Yes I can boot in normal mode. It's that I know safe mode is the only way to get apps out of the tray. I'm removing the apps by going in the directory. The tray hides tho, it doesn't even show when searched for using "Search".

Thanks again. Today I clicked on the shield in sys tray and up came the window I've mentioned before, "Windows Security Center". In the right hand area are the Firewall w/on which cannot be changed. Under that is "Auto Update" which can be turned off. Under that is "Virus Protect" with no options. It is this security program that is causing all the problems. I have third party software that protects from and removes any viruses and other malware very well. There are other apps like "Outlook Express" and several others I like to get rid of as well, but for now the security will be great.

Hello, eandy01Did you install a program named “Virus Protect”?It may be a malware application, see the following link to see if this is the case:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic98219.htmlI would advise running a virus and malware scan to ensure the system has not been compromised, there are free online virus scans available if you search the internet.Windows Security Center is there to let you know if you are protected or not, see the following link for more information:http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/internet/sp2_wscintro.mspx To disable it, open the security center and click Change the way Security Center alerts me and set your options.Windows update can be adjusted by following the steps provided at the following link:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525Important Note: This response contains a reference to a third party web site. David, thanks for the input. I tried your suggestions and got more problems so reset to original settings. Tried internet settings at bottom of frame and got no joy. Your e-mail was shown with content blocked as from a suspicious site. Now that's funny. Again I'm sure that the only way to stop this nonsence is to remove Windows Security Center from my machine. Programmers wrote the program in it it CAN BE REMOVED somehow. Would also like to delete Messenger, Front Page, Movie Maker,MS Internet Games, and Outlook Express. These programs are only hacker bait as far as I'm concerned. Looks very much like no one is going to tell me how.
