force IE to use a specific connection in vista
hi,I searched a lot to find if there is a way to force IE (or any program that connect to internet) to use a specific network adapter when there exist multiple NICs. There is no setting for neither IE nor windows (vista) settings. Does anybody know how to do such thing?

Hi, I am afraid that we cannot realize it. In Windows systems, only one Default Gateway exists. The following articles have explained this behavior. Default Gateway Configuration for Multihomed Computers http://support.microsoft.com/kb/157025 The IP routing table: TCP/IP http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc779122.aspx

I have two different IP, gateways and two adapters and ONE machine. So my machine should be treated as two different host machines. Am I right? Some applications have an option to bind themselves to a specific adapter. I want to know How IE knows or decides to use the adapters. Does it use randomly? Is there any priority for each adapter that windows assigns them?....

Hi, It depends on which network adapter connects to the Default Gateway. We can only access Internet via Default Gateway and only one Default Gateway exists in the system. From the route table you can check it. Have you encounter trouble with the network? What is the situation? Please feel free to let us know.

Hi, Currently the Default Gateway is Z.31.179.1. Network data for IE and all other programs in the system is sent or received by the Default Gateway. The back-up Default Gateway is Z.31.164.1. When Z.31.179.1 does not work, Z.31.164.1 will be the Default Gateway. If you would like to enable Z.31.164.1 as Default Gateway, you may open the properties of the connection that is connected to Z.31.179.1, manually set IP address and do not set Default Gateway.

OK, thanksNow I understand that not only IE, but also other applications such as firefox, flashget and those that don't manually bind themselves to a specific IP, they have to use default gateway in connection properties.

Hei Mahmoodn,I have a solution for ya!Use a proxy software and link it to a specific NIC. This way you can specify to a SW to use internet over that specific PROXY.The proxy will forward UP and DOWN all the traffic over that specific NIC.This is the way I am using ETHERNET for VPN and WiFI for internet. Thus I use IE over my company server intranet and FireFofox directly in internet over that proxy. There are many free proxy SW. I am using FreeProxy.==================Think diferent! Think smart!
