firewall outbound
HiI have previously posted about how to set the firewall for outbound protection for people who have asked.I have set up the outbound rules for most things that need to access the internet or network ok by using the relavent service or program or ip address.I am now stuck myselfwith media centre. I know what i need to do but i dont know what it needs doing to.Does anyone know which parts of media centre needs to be allowed ie exe names or dll names for media centre to function correctly for such things as the tv guide update andinternet tv beta. I wish to create rules in the firewall for them. Thanks for any helpmalcwindows 7 enterprise, amd x2 64 4200, msi platinum mb, nvidia 8600gt, 4 gig ddr2. using windows firewall and MSE.

what i would do in my case is open process explorer/task manager and then open media center and look for the executables that its running and the go to outbound rules create a new one with that executable which is prolly in the programfiles/system32 folder and then allow/allow secure/encrypt and pick anyone u want!Hope this helps,Kind Regards RR

HiI think i have answered my own question but i have included the results for anyone else who needs to know.I found the exe names from my vista installaion which uses onecare. If I click on the allowed media centre entrys and click edit it gives you the exe.Ihave used create an outgoing rule to allow these programs. For media centre they are windows/ehome/ehshell.exe ehrec.exe ehrecvr.exe mcupdate.exe mcgidhost.exe (I am not sure if this needs to be allowed but i think its something to do with the guide)for media player they areprogramfiles setup_wm.exe wmplayer.exeNote that there are 2 program files folders on 64 bit, program files and program files 86.I have also let through iexplore.exe in both 32 bit and 64 bit versions or program filesMSE anti malware which is a in the services along with windows update, windows time, windows firewall. click new rule then custom then next. then click customise and apply to service then choose the service to let through and continue with the wizard.Other programssidebar.exe in program fileswhmail.exe (windows live mail) in programfiles windows live mailhelppane.exe in windows directoryAlso because I want to access the private network explorer.exe and also allowed the IP of my multifunction networkprinter.Other things can be added like the acrobat reader who's exe canbe found in its directory in program files if installed.I hope this is of help to firewall configurers and I have deliberatly left it marked as unanswered so people can post any more exe's that need to be allowed. All the bestmalc

Hi, Regarding to the Windows Media Center related firewall configuration, I just get the following: Firewalls and Media Center Extender This is about firewall settings for Media Center Extender. If you also need this feature, please try it. With regard to the firewall settings for TV guide update and Internet TV beta, currently, I have not found related information. Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT
