fingerprint scanner and domain login - Problem?
I have an authentec fingerprint scanner and downloaed the beat of the new support for this in Windows 7. When I boot, I scan my fingerprint and I get a message that the system can't contact the Domain to validate my credentials. DUH! Until you get logged in and start, the network locaiton stuff doens't run and you aren't connected to the domain, right? AM I doing somehting wrong? Also, when you aren't connected to your domain this needs to work.

Your fingerprint scanner driver is probably using the wrong handshake protocol for the beta. Check on the makers site for a Vista or 7 driver. You might need to try 'troubleshoot compatibility' on the downloaded driver. Rightclick the file on your desktop.Rating posts helps other users Mark L. Ferguson MS-MVP

Well, I'm using Authentec and they are one of the 2 partners that MS annoucned were supporting this funcitonality. The driver and software are downloaded from the mfg site and are specifically built for the new Windows 7 capabilities.

I am using an Authentec fingerprint scanner on my domain joined Acer laptop. I had to use the Acer supplied Vista driver to get it working properly.Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience

You are probably doing something wrong. You must associate your fingerprint with your domain account if you want to log into the domain. This is somewhat similar to users using smart cards to login to a domain. The cards certificate must be associated with the domain user account. If you dont have your fingerprint associated with the domain account, then it will probably apply to the local, user account on the machine. However, for that to be applicable, you must first tell the computer where to login; either the domain (by default) or the local machine.

I'd associated it with my domain login and that didn't help.AFter 3 uninstalls/reinstalls, reboots and setting up fingerprints again, it now works. I even did fresh downloads after each uninstall and reinstalled with a clean copy each time. Strange

For the benefit of others researching this issue: Domain login be fingerprint must be specifically enabled. Go to Control Panel > Biometric Devices > Change biometric settings and checkmark the "Allow users to log on to a domain using their fingerprints".
