final release
MS,It is inconceivable MS is rewarding its loyal "band" of 7RC testers by making them do a fresh install and not permitting an inplace upgrade. This is an unreasonable and unfair burden hardly consistent with MS' usual customer loyalty programs.Neil Feinsteinnfeinst@sbcglobal.net

You really want to upgrade from a beta product to its final version? Doing that (if Microsoft permitted this) would probably let bugs that were fixed in the final version come through because they weren't fixed in the beta product you upgraded from. Please try every solution given to your problem...and reply back with its results... - JoelbX

I agree with you, Neil! It's not like I'm looking for "something for free" but can I at least save what I have and just do an upgrade?# re: Can I do an In-Place upgrade from Windows 7 Release Candidate To Release Code?? Friday, July 17, 2009 5:49 PM by mjbnocrap I think the original question was "Can I just upgrade from the Windows rc7 to the "new" Windows 7 once it is released. I, like jeff, think it is great that you chose to reformat your drive, wipeout everything that you have and start all over again, just so everything will be as Microsoft intended. What about us that have been the testers for the "last" year? Do I lose everything I have and have to start all over again? Can I not save the files and folders and settings and programs that I have installed and Verified that they work for your new OS? I would like to think that even if I did Buy Windows 7, I could at least keep what I had and do an Upgrade, rather than wiping everything out and having to start all over AGAIN. (That's what I hate about everytime Windows does an upgrade. Now it's up to ME to find my drivers, reinstall my programs, redo my settings, etc....)

If this RC is anything close to what it should be (i.e. - a "release candidate", or nearly complete), then the changes from RC to RTM should be minimal. I admit that it would be more complicated to do a "downgrade" from Ultimate to something else, but for those migrating from Ultimate to Ultimate, or those of us who installed Professional and are going to Professional, this should be EASY.
