files on XP system get corrupted frequently when accesing from a Vista system
I'm not sure if this is my machine specific or if it's Vista problem. I have several machines. One is an XP box where I use as a server to store data. I have another Vista box that I use as a work station. I map some folder on the server and access the files from the Vista box. Once in awhile, I get some files corrupted and they won't be able to be recovered. When I do a scan disk, it says something about the header corrupted and will be deleted. I have another XP box that access to other folders on the server with the same mapping method but I never see the problem on the XP machine. Could this be caused by the system differences between Vista and XP? Do I need to get a Vista system or Windows Server system to store data and share files as above? If someone knows the answer, please shred some light. Thanks.

how would a chkdsk /r make a difference if the files locate on the XP machine? I only use the Vista machine to access the files on the XP box through the mapped network drive.

Hi, What is the exact error messages? Is it related to permissions? As this issue only occurs to certain files, please make sure the files are not corrupted and run your antivirus software to make sure the system is clean first. @Magon: The latest problem I had was with an excel file and the message was "The file could not be found, check the spelling of the file name, and verify that the file location is correct." I saw this message when I tried to open the files directly from the server. I ran NAV scan for both the server and the client machine but didn't see anything. @drtunababa: I ran chkdsk /r at reboot time and the hard drive was totally fine. Actually, I didn't see any benefits to run chkdsk on the client machine which does not store the data locally. The corrupted files reside on the server and were accessed remotely by the client machine. This problem only happens on the vista client machine (and it's the only vista system in our office). So I was thinking about some incompatibility between XP and Vista file system or the way the files are updated and saved. Thanks.

The worst situation I had was that I could not open several files within a folder. Then after I reboot the computer, the whole folder was gone.
