file copy problems Win7-64 to XP-32 is slow or fails
This is really frustrating as I've tried to solve the problem one and off for about a week now. Every time I try to copy a file from Win7-64bit to a mapped drive on my XP machine the transfer fails if the file is larger than a few hundred K. It seems there are lots of people with a similar problem, I found many forums with different proposed solutions, but none of them fixed it for me. Does any one know if Microsoft has even acknowledged a problem? Copies with Explorer simply fail after about 30 seconds for large files. If I use Terracopy, I can get the copy to complete, but it is painfully slow. If I go the other way, have the Win7 machine pull from the XP everything is normal, both with Explorer and Terracopy. The network a 1GB switch, cables are Cat6 and I have no problems with other non-Win7 computers on the network. Using Terracopy: win7 --> XP 2 MB/sec XP --> win7 24 MB/sec Using Explorer: win7 -> XP fails xp --> win7 works seems about the same as Terracopy While trying to find a solution to this problem I've encountered a number of ideas to try... none of them worked, but here they are: Remote Differential Compression - turned off via Windows Features Anti-Virus - disabled on both systems No Home Groups being used Public Folder File & Printer sharing is on Autotuning disabled IPV6 Removed All Link speeds tested, none gave any better performance than 1G rate - auto setting used for most tests Windows 7 reports the driver for the NIC is the latest Win7 has had all patches installed. The laptop is a Dell Latitude E6510 i7 1.6GHz with 8.GB RAM NIC - Intel 82577LM Gigabit, driver is 12/10/2009 version 11.5.10.0 > netsh interface tcp show global Querying active state... TCP Global Parameters ---------------------------------------------- Receive-Side Scaling State : enabled Chimney Offload State : automatic NetDMA State : enabled Direct Cache Acess (DCA) : disabled Receive Window Auto-Tuning Level : disabled Add-On Congestion Control Provider : none ECN Capability : disabled RFC 1323 Timestamps : disabled The best, solution I've been given so far is to run Linux, but that's not an option and I kind of like Win7. But as a data point Linux on that system works fine. :) Thanks in advance for any help or insight. Cheers, Derek

I just tried updating the Intel driver to the one dated 4/12/2010 version 11.6.92.0. No change in performance.

Hi, I would like to confirm that have you tried to update the BIOS and install the updates for both operating systems? You may also try to disable Background intelligent transfer service temporarily for Windows XP to test the issue. I also would like to suggest you test the issue in Safe Mode with Networking and Clean Boot. What are the results? Thanks for the help. Sorry for the delay in my reply, I've been traveling a lot and not had the time to do more testing. I finally had a some time to look at this some more... I updated the BIOS and network drivers on the XP box. I couldn't find anything on the Win7 box, but it is brand new. With updates, the behavior is about the same, I can pull files from the XP box to Win7, but when I try to push a file to the XP box from the Win7 side it fails. I really don't need a "network diode" between my xp and win7 machines. From other machines (XP, Linux) I can push/pull as expected to the mounted drive served by the XP box. With the XP box in Safe/w Networking I can push/pull as expected. The speed isn't to far off from what I expect depending on the auto-negotiation the NIC comes up with. This is good, but using XP in Safe mode isn't really an option. Any thoughts on what could be causing the problem on the XP side the win7 doesn't like? Again this is frustrating because everything is fine on the network except for the win7 box. I can't say I'm excited to upgrade any more machines to Win7. Upgrading the XP box isn't an option - too much to reinstall. Regards, Derek
