Hi colakid I haven't seen this behavior where a file is appended with the .old file extension? Can you give us more details about how you are moving/copying the files andthe exact location where the file is being copied fromand the location where it is being copied to.---For information, here is an explanation of the default in Windows 7.Default Drag and Drop in Windows 7 using the left mouse button. In Windows 7 if you drag and drop a file from one folder to another folder, in the same location (for instance on the same hard drive) the file is moved, by default. If you drag and drop a file from from one folder and drop it into another folder in a different location (for instance another hard drive, network location, CD, or memory stick) the file will be copied by default. Default Cut or Copy and Paste in Windows 7. If you right click and cut or copy a file, from any location, and then paste it to any other location, where a file with the same name exists, then you should see the popup with the 3 options to either Copy and Replace, Don't copy, or Copy but keep both files.Default drag and drop using the right mouse button. This is the same as previous versions of Windows. When you drop the file in the target location the context menu will pop up with the options to Copy or Move.Hope this helps.Thank You for testing Windows 7 Beta Ronnie Vernon MVP

Why would you want to replace a file with itself? The behaviour you are seeing makes sense. The only thing you can do is copy the file as it can't replace itself. Two files with the same name can't exist in the same folder so a new name is used. Itwould be nice to be prompted forthe new name for the copy but that feature doesn't exist. You have to do two steps, copy, then rename. I think you are seeing a UAC prompt because the file is in a system area e.g Prorgam Files. Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience

Thank you for your reply. I am use to a prompt asking to replace the file. I edit files sometime so programs work the way I like them too.

I think I am misunderstanding what you are trying to do. Maybe you could explain it again step by step. Thanks.Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience

Editing a picture than saving it with the same name. NO prompt to replace the file. Windows 7 saves the file and makes another one with "pic.copy". Most people like to choose save rather than save as.I'm actually responding to this Question Here I see this only happens with protected files. Myself there is times when protected files need to be edited such like virus and debug and it would be nice to have the options to replace the file or a prompt.

Dvdmaker.exe was just an example and nothing more. dvdmaker was the first folder that pop up to show you as and example. So I could answer the question for someone

HiFile copy is created by windows explorer when it copy file that source and destination folders point to same place, but if you use some application to open and modify file and then press save (not save as) it will replace file and will not make any copy of it

I have good example, so I download MVP host copied the host to windows/system32/drivers/ext. Changing the way the user is notified when copying protected files could be helpfull. This would be nice if we had the choice to have a copy or not.
