fatal error c0000034 applying update operation 282 of 115544
Hi I just downloaded SP1 for Windows 7 home (64 bit), and when my computer restarted it went to the windows logo splash screen (when it normally goes to when installing major updates) but hung up at this message: fatal error c0000034 applying update operation 282 of 115544 (0_0000) I tried restarting and trying to boot into safe mode to do a system restore, but when I boot into safe mode, it starts loading the files and then hangs at a particular point (saying please wait). Is there anything I can do as I really need help with this??!

I went into system recovery tools and tried to restore the system to a previous point, however it say there are none, which I find surprising!!? System repair couldnt fix it, and I dont have a system image to use??

I've got exactly the same problem! I installed the same SP and i get the same error. When I try to fix it with System repair (Windows recovery CD). The first time it fails, the second time it says you've got a restore point do you want to go to a previous point? But than it keeps saying "Attempting repairs..." for an hour now. So I'm afraid it won't work to!

I had exactly the same problem. When I restarted it found a restore point and eventually recovered to the point prior to my attempting the upgrade.

I'm afraid I'm in the same boat. I just upgraded to Windows7 2 weeks ago and haven't done a system backup, yet. Now in the process of doing this latest of about a dozen updates in the 2 weeks I get this fatal error with no way to recover anything! I hope there's a way to fix this without having to undo everything I've done in the last 2 weeks! Beginning to think I should have stayed with Vista! **Thankfully, windows must have created a restore point before installing the update! I was able to use system restore to get my computer back up and running.**

If you haven't fixed it yet, try just using system restore without going into safe mode. It worked for me.

I got the same error and I think the same operation #282. http://blogs.webguild.com/gary/archive/2011/02/23/fatal-error-c0000034-installing-windows-7-sp1.aspx The restore from restore point worked. I'm waiting to find more info before trying again. The SP1 install did work on another PC running Windows 7 and one running Server 2008 R2. Gary Davis Webguild

System restore wouldn't work for me either, and the DISM command kindly proposed by Andre Ziegler returned a error (-2). What saved the day so far was to start Windows 7 with the F8 key pressed, and then select booting from the last known good state. This option is kind of hidden roughly in the middle of the boot menu.

We had four customers calling in today with exactely that problem on various machines. This thread did not help, but as stated by "Freeksite": http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproinstall/thread/1c9a7151-b48c-4a98-aae7-a4b82682ea8e/#bcabda57-7338-499f-aee2-d708e76df315 is the solution. Hi all! We had similar problems this morning with SP1 on 64 bit editions of Win 7. From checking the web it would seem this is very common issue with 64 bit Win 7. The best fix I found was here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-system/fatal-error-c0000034-on-boot-after-service-pack-1/5f7127e8-9887-4f01-aaa5-9729b69544b7 However, now that I have the laptops back at the pre-SP1 status I want to know what us 64 bit users are supposed to do now? As IT professionals we need to keep systems up to date but this SP just completely screws up our systems. If group policy in WSUS forces this update on other users then it will cause major issues for companies. Does anyone know if Microsoft is addressing this or what we can do? Thanks in advance!

Didn't work for me as /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions were invalid switches for DISM installed on HD. Ended up going with the modified pending.xml proceedure at http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproinstall/thread/1c9a7151-b48c-4a98-aae7-a4b82682ea8e#bcabda57-7338-499f-aee2-d708e76df315 as described below.

I had this problem on all of my Dell E4310 laptops today. The link that Freeksite provided allowed me to fix them all except one, which is being reinstalled now. Thanks alot! I did have one of them that would not give me the command prompt option. I was able to move it into an external hard drive and do the changes and then save the file(had to change some permission along the way too) and it fixed it.

Hi! Had the same issue here. "Fixed" by editing pending.xml. After startup it said that SP1 installation hadn't succeded and I don't see it in "installed updates" but in system properties it says that SP1 is installed. Here are log files. http://cid-2443346116d42776.office.live.com/self.aspx/W7^_SP1^_Err/sp1^_error.zip What should I do next? Regards, Chris

Recently there was an issue where Win7 sp1 was put on WSUS and then due to default settings in SBS, it was automatically applied. Depending on if it was installed with other updates, in some cases it failed miserably leaving you with a "C34" error (see blogs below for references). Many of you then googled and found references to editing the pending.xml file which got you immediately back in business, but put the system in what is now called a 'torn' state, i.e. 1/2 rtm, 1/2 sp1. To get a feel of the true impact I'd like to find out the following. Can you please email me at susan-at-msmvps.com with the following information? How many PCs under your control were impacted? How many MS support cases did you open? Thank you in advance for this info. http://blogs.technet.com/b/joscon/archive/2011/03/09/error-0xc0000034-during-service-pack-1-installations-for-windows-7-and-windows-2008-r2.aspx http://blogs.technet.com/b/joscon/archive/2011/03/11/why-you-don-t-want-to-edit-your-pending-xml-to-resolve-0xc0000034-issues.aspx http://blogs.technet.com/b/joscon/archive/2011/03/16/new-information-on-error-code-0xc0000034.aspx

"boot from the Windows 7 DVD or Windows Recovery Environment (F8)[1] and run the command prompt and run this: When I boot and then press F8 I get two options; Repair or boot normally. There is no option to run a DOS command. If I select repair I get a second window asking if I want to do a system restore. It then displays "attempting repairs, then tells me that it can't repair! On the last try I did get a window which offered a DOS prompt. It appeared to create a vertural drive (drive X) I entered the string DISM /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions which returned "unable to access the image". I tried restoring to the point before I had installed SR-1, wouldn't do it. I'm now at the point of blowing the whole install away and reinstalling from the ground up. Installing all the 100+ updates EXCEPT SR-1. This particular unit is an eMachine 64bit ET1831-05 I had no problems with SR-1 on my other Win7 unit, a local manufacture 64bit with a Biostar TA780G M2+ MB Why do I think that Win7 is still in bata mode?

Got it fixed in 5 minutes! Do the following: 1. Locate a second computer with access to the internet. 2. Open Notepad. 3. Copy and paste the following text into Notepad. Dim xmlDoc, node, nodeList, fileName, backupFileName, numberOfPOQNodes Set xmlDoc = CreateObject("Microsoft.XMLDOM") If Wscript.Arguments.Count = 0 Then WScript.echo("Error! No XML file specified.") Wscript.quit End If fileName = WScript.Arguments(0) backupFileName = Left(fileName, InStrRev(fileName, ".") - 1) & "_backup.xml" If Not xmlDoc.load(fileName) Then WScript.echo("Failure loading XML file " & fileName & ".") Wscript.quit End If xmlDoc.save(backupFileName) Set nodeList = xmlDoc.documentElement.selectNodes("POQ") numberOfPOQNodes = nodeList.Length For Each node in nodeList xmlDoc.documentElement.removeChild(node) Next xmlDoc.save(fileName) Set xmlDoc = Nothing WScript.echo(numberOfPOQNodes & " POQ nodes removed. Script completed.") 4. Click File, and then click Save as. 5. Name the file script.vbs and save the file to a removable media device such as a USB thumb drive. APPLYING THE SCRIPT TO THE FAILED INSTALLATION: 1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. You have to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you have to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears and then shutting down and restarting your computer. 2. Use the arrow keys to select Repair your Computer in the Advanced Boot Options area, and then press Enter. If you are prompted, select the Windows 7 installation to be repaired, and then click Next. 3. Select the language and a keyboard input method, and then click Next. 4. Select a user name, type your password, and then click OK. 5. Under System Recovery Options, make a note of the Windows 7 drive letter listed on the line below Choose a recovery tool. For example, you may see something similar to the following. Operating system: Windows 7 on (C:) <VolumeName> Note In this example, the drive letter for Windows 7 would be C. 6. Under System Recovery Options, click Command Prompt. 7. Insert the removable media with the script (.vbs) file that you previously created into the PC. 8. At the command prompt, navigate to the drive, and the directory, that contains the script (.vbs) file that you previously created. For example, if you previously saved the script.vbs file that you created to the root of a USB thumb drive, and the drive letter associated with the USB thumb drive is the “E” drive, you would simply type the following at the command prompt, and then press Enter. E: Note If you are not sure which drive contains the removable media you can use Diskpart to display a list of drives. To run Diskpart, follow these steps. 1. Type Diskpart, and then press Enter. 2. Type List volume, and then press Enter. 3. Make a note of the drive that contains the removable media with the script (.vbs) file that you previously created. Assuming you used a USB thumb drive, the drive type will be listed as “Removable”. 4. To exit Diskpart type Exit, and then press Enter. 9. At the command prompt, type the following command and press Enter: Cscript Script.vbs C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml In this example, (c:\) is the drive letter that the Windows 7 operating system is installed on. This will run the script in the Script.vbs file. After the script completes, you may see a message similar to following. 2 POQ nodes removed. Script Completed 10. To exit the command prompt type Exit, and then press Enter. 11. Restart your computer. Service Pack 1 installation should now complete successfully. Further problems? Hi Herman I had the same problems as many with service pack when auto installed yesterday. I followed your instructions thanks and got window restarted. It is now running incredibly slowly through all programmes. Any idea if this will improve over time or if there is a bigger problem? I've followed the link through to MS support but obviously can't contact them without paying! Any help would be really welcome - everything was running fine until this pack! - how does an improvement result in making things worse! Thanks
