failure configuring windows - reverting changes - endless cycle
Win 7 64 Pro. has run fine (Well workable, STILL losing gadget from the screen!!!!!) for a long time, updates run when they arrive. Most recent updates have created an endless cycle. On shutdown installing X updates On boot 0% - LONG wait, failure configuring windows - reverting changes PISSED! I just want my working system back. Without the LONG wait at both ends of use. Saw old messages about same errors from years ago. Found nothing recent. I've made no changes, except auto-updates,. so feel more than a little cheated. OK, this is a forum, any help appreciated, but no, I don't want to spend days debugging Ms's auto update. Help? Reference to a known issue? How to make it go through & go AWAY? How to make it just go away? Will now look at the list of updates pending & see if one can select one at a time or something stupid like that, goodbye useful evening, good bye days? Pointers? No way can I be the only one getting this! Thanks in advance.

Click the Start orb. In the Search programs and files field type in up. Under Programs click the Windows Update link. Click the Change settings link in the left frame. Under Important Updates, set the drop down window to " Download updates but let me choose whether to install them " for now. Agree to the UAC prompt. Install all of the offered updates except for KB982018 as that is known to cause all of the updates' installation failures. Restart the system. Install KB982018 last, restart once more. NOTE: If KB2534366 is now being offered for installation do not install it along with the other updates. Install it after you've installed the other updates, then restart, install KB982018 and restart again. Install KB2534366 now and restart once more. Yes, I know, one should not have to continually restart the system to install updates but ... that's the only workaround I know that will install all of the updates successfully. Remember to go back to Windows Update and set it whatever you want it set to for Important updates.MowGreen Windows Expert IT Pro - Consumer Security *-343-* FDNY NEVER FORGOTTEN

I tried this. It did not work! What did work for me on a Lenovo K330 running Windows 7 Ultimate, is to go to the control panel, select "Windows Update", view the critical updates, uncheck all except the most recent. Then install it. I don't get the "Failure to Configure Windows ,reverting changes" message this way for this single update installation. Repeat this procedure for each of the remaining critical updates, one-by-one. This can be time consuming because each time an update is installed, a new restore point is created. I assume the same procedure should work for the optional updates, but I have not verified this. Apparently, there is a Windows 7 OS bug which causes the endless cycling loop and the "Failure to Configure Windows, Reverting Changes" message. The bug involves the pile up of Critical Updates that need to be simultaneously installed. Windows 7 does not seem to be able to install more than some small number of updates in a single cycle without crashing.
