Is there any third part security application installed on your computer, like AVG, Norton?

If so, please temporarily disable or even more remove it and then check the issue.

Would you please let me know what update you are installing in Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features -> View installed updates?

Did you try to update to Windows 8.1? If so, the issue can be caused by redirect the user profiles. Please run command mklink C:\Users D:\Users and try to update again.

If you just try to install the general security or other updates, and the above suggestions dont work, please help to upload the %windir%\windowsupdate.log here for further research.

Please upload them to a file sharing service like Skydrive or "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.
