enable 802.1X on a wireless network
hi, i try enable 802.1X authentication i found this > http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Enable-802-1X-authentication enable 802.1X on a wireless network 1. Open Manage Wireless Networks by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type wireless, and then click Manage wireless networks. DONE 2. Right-click the network that you want to enable 802.1X authentication for, and then click Properties. DONE 3. Click the Security tab, and then, in the Security type list, click 802.1X. DONE 4. In the Encryption type list, click the encryption type you want to use. On wireless networks, 802.1X can be used with Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) or WiFi Protected Access (WPA or WPA2) encryption. This is my problem, i do not have WPA option, only WEP, so please help 5. In the Choose a network authentication method list, click the method you want to use. i use windows 7 enterprise x64 with latest intel driver for my wireless NIC access point > cisco aironet 1250 radius > server 2008 R2, Network connectivity between access point and server is sure good

You need to be a little clearer about #4. It states you can use wither WEP or WPA. You state you only have WEP option and need help. What do you need help with? Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

if I choose the WPA 2 enterprise option instead of dot1x, windows reports an invalid configuration and labels the network as unavailable. With dot1x there is no error report, but I am unable to connect

The access point can be configured for any wireless connectivity method. Contact the system administrator for the correct connectivity details. There are some issues from Intel. Again, check the access point configuration. http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/CS-022146.htm Which wireless network adapter are you using? You may want to use the Intel ProSet connection software rather than Windows.

i see what you're saying. it's very odd. i checked both Win7 and Vista. they're the same. looking in Help and Support and searching for 802.1X Authentication, the result 1. Enable 802.1X Authentication is identical to the online page you linked. it seems to state we should see all three options WEP, WPA, WPA-2 there. but as you say, only WEP is offered. however, looking at result 5. What are the different wireless network security methods? says something different. it explains what is going on. intead of choosing 802.1X (where it only offers WEP), we're supposed to choose WPA-Enterprise or WPA2-Enterprise options. these options are separately in that same dialog you're discussing. i'm sure you saw them but were just confused by it. it is confusing. especially considering the Help and Support info. here's the online page: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/What-are-the-different-wireless-network-security-methods THIS IS NOT AN ANSWER

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi_Protected_Access WPA-Enterprise and WPA2-Enterprise is also called WPA-802.1X Mode. So there's your answer! :)
