emails won't download from server
I am having trouble with Outlook Express 6.0. I use a desktop using XP. I also use the newer Windows Mail on my laptop using Vista. When I travel, I download emails into my Windows Mail on the laptop, but tell it to leave the messages on the server so I can download them to my desktop when I return home. Lately, I have been having trouble getting the email to download onto my home computer. I still get the emails fine on the laptop. I also tried switching identities on the same computer to my wife's email. We both use Comcast. I was able to download her emails fine. When I try to down load emails, I might get one or two messages, and then an error like the following: An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'mail.comcast.net', Server: 'mail.comcast.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800C0133. Can anyone tell me why I am having this problem? Thanks, Mark1 person needs an answerI do too

http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact<Quote::>The Inbox may be full or damaged. You can first try (from the File menu) Choose to work in Offline mode for file safety Next, choose Folders> Compact All Folders This can sometimes repair minor problems. Open the Inbox and move messages to a user created folder under "Local Folders." For the instructions below pay attention to the Inbox.dbx file only. Close Outlook Express before working in the message store folder, (although there are exceptions). This behavior can occur if the client mail store contains a damaged .dbx file. The damaged file is probably Outbox.dbx, Inbox.dbx, or Sent Items.dbx. To resolve this behavior, remove the damaged .dbx file: 1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer. 2. In Windows Explorer, on the Tools menu, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders. 3. You may need to include hidden files and folders (Windows 2000 and XP). 4. Type Outbox.dbx in the Named box, and then click Find Now. 5. Right-click the file name, and then click Rename. 6. Rename the file to Outbox.old. Note that deleting a .dbx file also deletes any e-mail messages or other data in the folder. The Store folder can be found in Tools, Options, Maintenance tab.Store Folder. The text for the path can be copied using a right-click and then entered in the Start, Run box. OK to open the Store folder. Each identity has its own Store folder. Disregard this method if Outlook Express cannot be opened. Restart Outlook Express. If you still receive the error message, repeat these steps to rename or delete the Sent Items.dbx file and the Inbox.dbx file. Open the Store Folder Instead of using search the store folder can be opened directly. Each identity has its own store folder. a.. In Outlook Express click on Tools, Options, Maintenance tab...Store Folder. b.. Place the cursor at the left of the text of the path to the folder. c.. Drag the cursor to the right until the text scrolls to the end. d.. Right-click on the text and choose Copy. e.. In the Start, Run box right-click Paste. Click OK to open the store folder. f.. Close Outlook Express before working with the message store files. Using Keyboard Shortcuts for Transfer of the Folder Path Courtesy of: Jim Pickering, MVP-Outlook Express An even easier method when opening that page is to use the Tab to highlight the folder location, then Ctrl+C and close OE, then use Start/Run and Ctrl+V. Same caveat about hidden files applies but can be easily modified in Explorer by using Tools/Folder Options. -- Tim K. aka Kuay Tim <Quote::/> nass -- http://www.nasstec.co.uk

Error Number: 0x800C0133 = a corrupt Inbox.Move any mail you wish to save to a local folder you create. Then delete the problem Inbox as follows.Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer or, copy and paste it into Start | Run.In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3 the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options | View. With OE closed, find the Inbox.dbx and delete it. A new one will be created automatically when you open OE.General precautions for Outlook Express:Do not archive mail in the Inbox or Sent Items. Create your own user defined folders and move the messages you wish to save to them. Empty Deleted Items folder daily. Although dbx files have a theoretical capacity of 2GB, I recommend about a 300MB max for less chance of corruption. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often.Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed.Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 Bruce Hagen ~ MS-MVP [Mail]

You're welcome. What is a .bak file? This is due to the OE update, (KB923694). Now when you compact, a copy of your dbx files are sent to the Recycle Bin in the event that something should go wrong and messages, or entire folders, are lost when you are compacting. Many people do not back up Outlook Express on a regular basis. This new mandatory backup is something people have been asking for quite awhile as we spend a lot of time helping people getting their messages back, and they have to purchase a tool to recover messages. You can empty the Recycle Bin any time you want and the bak files will go away until you compact again. For more info, see the information outlined in red here:www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2If you don't currently back up OE regularly, I would suggest you get this, or a similar tool. This freeware tool backs up everything in OE in seconds. Disregard what is written in red. That is referring to a different program.Outlook Express Quick Backup (OEQB):http://www.oehelp.com/OEBackup/Default.aspx Bruce Hagen ~ MS-MVP [Mail]
