Messages would not be saved on your mail server, (OptusMail), unless you had selected that option.Outlook Express uses DBX files. Microsoft Outlook uses PST files. Before we go any farther, are you using Outlook Express, or Outlook?Bruce HagenMS-MVP Oct. 1, 2004 ~ Sept. 30, 2010Imperial Beach, CA

i am using outlook express. i take that once u view a file through outlook express u can no longer view it in optus webmail,There is an option to leave messages on the server, but let's handle that later. In this new instance of OE, click: File | Identities | Manage Identities. Is another on listed there? If yes, post back now. If not, continue on.Do this first:In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View. Now that these files are viewable, do a search for *.dbxIf you find a folder named Outlook Express, open it and see if it contains your missing folders/messages.Post back with your results before continuing.Bruce HagenMS-MVP Oct. 1, 2004 ~ Sept. 30, 2010Imperial Beach, CA

You enabled Show Hidden Files and Folders and found no results for dbx files? Not even in the new instance of OE?Do an Advanced search for *.dbx and include Hidden Files and Folders. Any luck at all? Also, look in the Windows Recycle Bin. (Not OE's Deleted Items). Any .bak files listed there?Bruce HagenMS-MVP Oct. 1, 2004 ~ Sept. 30, 2010Imperial Beach, CA

Pst files are used by Outlook,a very different program from Outlook Express. > on computer but with no luck, has anyone encountered problems like this before or know of how i can recover these emails. zto me there prob still there on the computer but I don't know how to access them> > Cheers everyone Ken Blake (MS MVP)

I suspect what happened was that OE decided to reset the message store location and so it started up with the Welcome message. This used to happen a lot back when, such as point c under tip 4 here: www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#4 steve <Bruce Hagen> wrote in message news:Email removed for privacy...its okay i've got them back now thanxYou're welcome.
