dhcp fails?
I have a rather strange problem. On my new vista laptop i had a network connection (wireless). I ran the install applied the updates and then all of a sudden the network connection stopped working. I cannot seem to get a DHCP address from my linksys54G router! but i could before i installed all the updates. I dont know which one did it. This happens on both my wireless and wired connection. If i put in static ips it all works fine. now the strange thing. I have other machines that can get a dhcp from my router. I took the broke laptop across the street and got a dhcp address from the neighbor?! I bring it back and no go. wired or not. but i have other laptops and desktops (even virtual pcs) that have no problem with dhcp. can someone guide me in where to fix this problem? I have tried the broadcast flag thing but no luck. and keep in mind, i can connect dhcp to other routers and i could connect to mine before some updates got installed. but none of the updates were related to the network. Using a Dell 620. thanks for any help! dm.

Hi, Execute the following netsh command from the Administrator's Command Prompt. netsh advfirewall set allprofiles firewallpolicy allowinbound, allowoutbound The above the netsh command will remove all the filters in the firewall. All the incoming & outgoing packets are allowed, Hence make sure your laptop is in secure network. Now try to get the IP address. Still if you are not getting IP address, Send us the eventlog and NETMON captures to ftdhcp@microsoft.com. Note: Make sure you are reverting the firewall setting back. Thanks

Before i issue this command can you tell me how to revert the firewall after testing? Also can i just disable the firewall and try it? Another development...the next day i was able to get a DHCP address. but then the next day after that it had to use the static again (alternate config). I have recently gone to my inlaws for the holiday and had to use static on there linksys as well. Seems it may be intermittant? maybe the linksys doesnt respond fast enough? All check with there support as well but i know i had no issues with xp. daniel.

I'm having the same issue with my DELL D620 and my Apple Airport Express WAPs, it's really annoying, any more suggestions other than removing the firewall filters?

Definitely Turning off the Firewall is not a solution. I just want to make sure that issue is not with Vista. or Else it would be great if you can send us the dhcp tracing logs. netsh dhcpclient trace enable <<do the steps for reproing the issue>> netsh dhcpclient trace disable The Trace files will be generated at %WINDIR%\System32\LogFiles\WMI\DHCP*.* Send across the file to us to further investigation.
