Therefore:Type the following into Start > Run and click OK: chkdsk /fYou will get a popup window that asks if you want to run chkdsk the next time the system is started. Type Y and press Enter.Reboot. Let chkdsk finish.You should then be able to run defrag.

If you watch chkdsk start and go away, if Windows is running when you get back, chkdsk finished.If you want to see what happened while you were gone:click Start > Run > eventvwr > OKIn the Event Viewer window that opens, click "Application" in the left paneStarting at the top in the right pane, scroll down until you see "Winlogon" in the source columnDouble click on that entry and you should see the chkdsk report.
