cursor keyboard issues
Just recently bought a dell inspiron 1545 laptop with Windows 7 OS. while typing along, every few key stokes, a short key action would happen without using the control key. example: type an "h" and the "history" window would drop down or type "t" and and new tab window would open or type a "t" and the cursor would tab over, type an "f" and the file menu would pop up. Does not matter if i'm on the internet, or what program i might be working in - so not a software issue, it seems to be a hardware or OS issue. Dell tech support replaced the keyboard, did not solve problem. Dell tech support had me to reinstall Windows 7 OS. That helped, but still when typing, the cursor will jump to another line or jump back a few words! Anyone else had this problem with W7 OS or a dell laptop? Help!

It seems this is a common problem (the jumping cursor issue) with some Windows users, regardless of laptop model. I have a Lenovo, recently upgraded to Windows 7 and the problem began. I have tried all of the fixes recommended by other users - installing new drivers, adjusting touchpad, installing a touchpad freeze program. The service department where I bought the computer couldn't help me. Nothing worked - I couldn't even type a short email without having to redo several times. I finally decided to plug in a USB mouse, but that alone did not eliminate the problem. I then had the idea of taping a jar lid over the touchpad and controls while using the mouse - voila! Kind of a ridiculous way to solve the problem and makes the laptop a little less convenient, but at least I can type lengthy reports without issues. Also makes it very likely that this is an ultra-sensitive touchpad problem that somehow is exacerbated by some Windows systems. I've read that others have had this problem with Vista and XP. Hope you find this helpful.

I should also mention that I was very careful NOT to accidentally hit the touchpad while typing - it seems the touchpad had become sensitive to the shadow of my thumbs fleeting over it....that may sound poetic, but it was quite a nuisance!

What is the model of your laptop? Is there any driver update available? You may boot in Safe Mode and see if this issue happens. If you have installed any third party soft keyboard, or keyboard drivers, you may uninstall them. Then install the latest keyboard driver from Dell website if it is present.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Yes I have a brand new Acer and it happens to me. I feel like smashing it but I paid lots of money for it Keep your thumb shadows away buy a external mouse and tape a playing card over the laptop mouse and the right and left buttons under the mouse. Rebooting helps me shutdown right down and then reboot. My old acer does not have this problem and it runs XP. We are talking 5 years ago.
