copying large files over my home network from windows 7 pc.
I have recently put windows 7 64 bit version "Clean install" on my previously vista pc. I have a 2008 server setup as a domain controler and have 2 xp clients and my windows 7 machine as a client as well. I have my network drives mapped via windows preferences and things have been running great. But since I putt wndows 7 on my one pc when ever I try to copy large files Usually large avi files (around 1 to 2 gigs) the transfer will randomely fail telling me that I do not have permissions. I do have permissions however. I can transerf files fine with the same user account from my xp machines and it worked fine with this same pc when it was vista. But only since it's been changed to windows 7 have I had this issue. I have run updates and updated my nic driver but still have the issue. Sometimes I can get the transfer to finish if I tell it to retry multiple times but sometimes the file get's currupt if I do that. small files go without a problem. This is problematic to me as I use my windows 7 pc to convert large video files and store them on my server. Also I stream them from my server to my Samsung LED tv. So now it has become a bit cumbersome trying to get my video files to my server needing to use an external flash drive instead of being able to simply move them over the network. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You have disabled power saving features on the nic's right? Windows 7 has a bad tendency to just cut the power to the nic even if its downloading from the internet or across file servers. It doesn't seem to detect that there is traffic flow but rather senses if keyboard/mouse input is occuring. (just my opinion of course), but since I've disabled it on all my machines, have not had a single network problem (on a domain).MCSE, MCSA, MCDST [If this post helps to resolve your issue, please click the "Mark as Answer" or "Helpful" button at the top of this message. I'll double check tonight when I get home but I belive I have disabled any power saving on my nics. But I can't remember now off hand. I'll check thanks. What's strange is I have heard of people having tons of issues with vista but I didn't have any issues with vista. Only after I went to windows 7 wich is suppose to be much better. Ahh well.

Hi, Can you transfer some smaller files or some documents to the same location? At this stage, I suggest you temporarily turn off firewall and antivirus program on each machine, and then copy the same problematic files to the same location again. If there is any error message, please capture and upload it Thanks, Novak

Sorry it's been a while. Problem still exists. Yes I can copy smaller files and or groups of files to same location. Doesn't matter where I'm trying to copy too. From the windows 7 pc It will give me an message saying I do not have rights to perform that operation (and I do have rights). I can click try again sometimes it will continue on with the transfer but rarely have I been able to actually complete a transfer. I also tried pulling a large directory (17gigs of data) from an xp machine logged into the domain. So I figured maybe going from xp it would be able to tranfer the data. I was wrong. What happens when I try to do that the windows 7 machine just simply looses it's network connection. I get an error on the xp machine that the resorse is no longer available. Then on the win7 machine I can't access the internet or any mapped drives. I have to reboot it and relog in. I have turned off windows firewall and disabled the power features on the nic. It's an onboard nic wich I have not had issues with in the past so it is a strange issue. I was thinking of throwing a stand alone nic in that machine and see if it still does the same thing. I find it crazy that I didn't have issues like this with vista wich was known to have network issues and now do with win 7 wich was suppose to fix those issues. I'll do more trouble shooting with my hardware before i completely blame the OS but nothing else has changed other then installing 7. It sure is annoying though! I have a need to move large files from that machine all the time! thanks again!

I thought this was already solved in another thread with that Task Offloading business: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itpronetworking/thread/fb1d47c2-1c85-4835-9696-e28ce343464f That's how i fixed it...

I would try this Apparently you need to tell Windows that you want to use the machine as a file server and that it should allocate resources accordingly. Set the following registry key to ‘1′: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\LargeSystemCache and set the following registry key to ‘3′: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\Size After making these changes and restarting, I haven’t seen this issue arise again http://alan.lamielle.net/2009/09/03/windows-7-nonpaged-pool-srv-error-2017

Hi All, Better late than never. I have had the same problem for a long time, and today I decided to solve it, at least give it at try ;-) I found some interesting links that guided me in the right direction. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/fix-problems-with-copying-large-files-in-windows-vista/ The page describes how to disable auto tuning of the network, I tried that with no luck. I then tried to transfer a large file to another computer running win7, never saw the problem with WinXP. The file was transmitted fine, strange... None of the machines could transfer a large file to the server. So I changed the LAN card in the server to a 3Com quality card (prev. I had a very cheap card installed), that did'nt change anything. Then I foound a link to MSDN blog on the above mentioned page that describes in detail the auto tuning option. And also a link to a Microsoft kb http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934430 on that kb page I foound a link to a Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool, very interesting.... I ran that tool and found out that I had some hardware in my network that was unable to handle the autotuning. I have a lot of equipment new and old mixed, so I changed the equipment around so that I was sure to have a "path" of new equipment between my server and the computer I wanted to transmit files from. And Voila I could finally send large files across my network... (I Have just send an 12GB harddisk image to my server) Ohh... I just remembered that autotuning was disabled on my PC, will try to change it back to normal and try again. OK, it seems to work I have transfered around 10 GB and that is much more than I could send before the hardware swap. Strangely enough I receive a windows scaling not supported message when I try the the Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool. I guess that it is the ADSL equipment that fails, but I'm not sure. I Hope that this information can help. Btw. first time I write a possible sollution :-). Best regards Mads
