control panel not reponding, printers and faxes option
Trying to cure a printer problem, when I double click on Printers and Faxes, Task Manger eventually tells me that Control Panel is Not Responding. However when I click on other Icons in Task Manager, I can open them and work with them, eg. change screen saver from Display.

Hi seafordman, ·What is the service pack installed on your computer?·Is printer and fax working apart from opening it from control panel? Check in event viewer if any error code or error message is listed. You may refer the below link which has steps to check event viewer. Link: How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427 Remove all the external devices connected to the computer and then try to access Printers and faxes from control panel and let us know the result. I would also suggest you to install Service pack 3 on your computer, if you have not installed the same. Service pack 3 has all the latest hotfix which improves the reliability of Windows by installing the latest software updates You may download Service Pack 3 from the link:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyId=68C48DAD-BC34-40BE-8D85-6BB4F56F5110&displaylang=en Regards:Samhrutha G S - Microsoft Support.Visit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think.

Hi SamhruthaIn reply to your advice-I have had SP3 for a couple of years.Because it is very cold here today I decided to work in another room and set up with my printer connected to a different USB socket. Then I tried printing a new email to see what showed up in the event logs and surprise, surprise the printer worked normally. However, in an effort to get to the bottom of the problem I had subscribed to Filecure and RegistryBooster within the last couple of days and it may be that one of them cured the problem. For the first time in over a week, I can now use Control Panel, Printers and Faxes to look at the document log by double clicking the printer, which I could not do when I logged the problem with this XP Forum. When I was last able to access the document log about 10 days ago, it showed one document, which was Cancelled. After turning off both the printer and the PC a number of times the cancelled document was still listed. Then a few days ago I could not get into Printers and Faxes at all.Looking at my event logs for the last couple of weeks lists many warinngs and failures which I am not technically equiped to interpret. If you wish I could forward them all to you. The first one which I suspect points to the problem, was I think the day the problem started and says-Type error, Date 13/11/2010, Time 16.27.23, Source Print, Category none, event 50, User SYSTEM, computer DYNAMOAnyway, for the time being my problem is solved, so thanks for your advice Samhrutha.
