connectivity issue with windows 7 64bit and network drives
Several users are getting a delayed response when trying to open a network drive. There are several instances where it would take 15-30 seconds to open a network drive. Also users are having issues saving a document, receiving the error message "access denied you do not have rights to do this" seems like the network connection is breaking at some point to making the computer think there is another copy open. some users are having issues connecting to an application that points to a network drive. several attempts logging off and on usually solves the problem What I've done so far: latest windows updates latest word processing and client updates disabling file caching

Hi, if it is a small/Medium Network, assign IP Address's manually to every PC. turn on NetBios & "access denied you do not have rights to do this" -- this is usually caused due to security. Example:- a directory is shared with Full permission to Person A, but in security Tab Person A does not have access this can cause this problem. if security is not a problem Allow everyone with Full Permission, in security tab --harjit

What are you using for a network server? My MVP is for the Windows Desktop Experience, i.e. Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 IT I am best with C++ and I am learning C# using Visual Studio 2010 Developer | Windows IT | Chess | Economics | Hardcore Games | Vegan Advocate | PC Reviews

suse linux manually assigning IP addresses will not work in this environment. Will check into the security rights but full permission does not seem like a possible solution thanks

also users are owners of the documents they work in, they are not shared. But as they work in the document and want to save to a network share (which they own) periodically, receive the error message "access denied you do not have rights to do this" as i stated before the computer seems to think there is another copy open

Hi, Please update the network adapter driver from Device Manager manually. Regarding the slow connection issue, although you have disabled file caching, I still suggest running following commands with Administrator privilege to check the result. netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled netsh int ip set global taskoffload=disabled Regarding the access denied error when trying to save a document, please set the full permission for everyone. If the issue occurs again, try to take the ownership of the folder. Also, modify the following group policy on Windows 7. Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\Network security: LAN Manager authentication level Please change to "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated". But since i received the error message with saving the file i still think the problem exists. thanks for your reply

Programs on the network will hang periodically with for no apparent reason. Opening word with templates stored on the network will just sit for 20-40 sec before opening, or they wont load the start-up template at all. Saving to the network can cause it to hang. And even trying to access folder properties from folders on the network will cause windows 7 to hang. All symptoms point to a drop in network connectivity. It is not due to network traffic, all folder permissions are set as stated above. Any ideas would be great.

if you are using Microsoft office 2007 than Upgrade to Microsoft Office 2007 SP2 or Microsoft 2010 and try disabling Anti-virus temporary to check. It is like two antivirus installed in same PC when accessing network PC.

Which version of SUSE Linux? (SLES [Suse Linux Enterprise Server] 10.x or 11.x OR OpenSUSE 10.x or 11.x) Are you connecting to a SAMBA server on this server? Since you are said, that you use a client, what client are you using - as for access to a SAMBA server there is no client needed (except of the native Windows network client)?Wolfgang

All major distributions of Linux include SAMBA in their software library. This tool allows Linux to look like a Windows server to Windows clients. Its very sophisticated and it can even act as a active domain controller if you need that. It also can work with Linux users who might be receiving email from it. SAMBA can also have its own user database that is isolated from Linux if desired and it can convert back and forth easily. Its a lot of work to setup SAMBA to do all this so reading the manuals is a good start. That's not, what I wanted to know. As the OP stated in his starting post he updated the client software (besides updating Windows) - and furthermore he disabled file caching. This is a setup typically found in Novell OES server (= SLES 10.x server + Novell OES addon) networks, where the Novell client is used to access the files and not Windows networking to SAMBA on the Linux side. Furthermore he could use the Novell CIFS server on the Linux side, which is very different from a SAMBA server in behaviour, besides using the same network protocol to share files. So many unknown parameters, which need clarification before real advice is possible.Wolfgang

I have not use Netware for a long time. I used back in the 80s when there was not much else around. I kept the machine but when I bought a Compaq Desk Pro I use FreeBSD which was native to 32-bit. Netware 386 was over 18 months later. Using a Netware server complicates maters significantly. This is because the OS uses a different protocol although Version 4 finally added IP. The software stack is way different too, so its a real mess to setup. I have to ask, is there some legacy application running on the Netware server that cannot be ported? yes it is, I dont think its the problem. None of the suggestions from Niki Han worked. For some users it never happens then we have a handful of users that happen often. Some users have counted how long it would take to open a network share one user counted 10 seconds
March 16th, 2011 4:30pm

This most probably is a client problem. There are several issues with the Novell Client 2 for Win7. First you should go to the latest client, which is Client 2 Sp1 IR5 in which most issues are solved, but some remain. Best you go to the Novell forums (http://forums.novell.com/novell-product-support-forums/open-enterprise-server/oes-platform-independent/oes-client-windows/) which can give you more information specific to your setup.Wolfgang
