connect to Ethernet at boot
We are using Windows 7x64 Ultimate HP computer. The Ethernet network cards connected to always on Cisco Linksys Broadband router, model WRT54G. Often, after we boot, the computer will directly connected to the Internet. However, many times, the computers do NOT connect to the internet after boot. We have to bring up the Network and Sharing Center, then, click the red "X" mark to run the Windows Network Diagnostics. The dialog box will indicate "Windows tested your Internet connections and verified that you are able to access some websites. Are you looking for help with a different issue?" Then, the red "X" mark disappeared, and this computer is connected to the Internet. What can we do to make the connection to Internet automatic every time we boot up?

Hi, Thanks for the post! According to my understanding ,you cannot directly connect with the internet unless after Windows Network Diagnostics. Network Diagnostics do a lot of tests for the connection. The basic tests are: · Verify HTTP, HTTPS and FTP connectivity against Microsoft.com. · Check for network adapter issues. · Verify wireless functionality. · Validate IP configuration. · Check DNS and gateway settings and functionality. Then the network diagnostics tool uses four levels of repair automation to resolve problems. · Automatic repair automation · Approval repair automation · Manual repair automation · Contact Support repair automation After diagnosing, your connection works again. Therefore, I would like to recommend you do the following: 1. Check the connectivity among every ports, make sure of a health physical connection. 2. Verify the IP address, avoiding some conflicts. You can compare the IPCONFIG /ALL results before and after networking diagnostics 3. Check the DNS settings. Hope it helps! No, most often Windows 7 and others, Vista, XP ... do automatically connect to Internet after boot. Many days, this computer do connect to the Internet after boot. But, half of the time, after boot, no internet connection. I need to execute Windows Network Diagnostics, then, click the "Red X" mark between Gateway and Internet. Then, the red mark disappear and now the computer is connected to Internet. Why do I have to do this every other day? Can you please tell me how to check DNS settings?

First, power off the computer, the router, and the modem for the ISP. Then power on the modem, wait for good lights, then the router, wait, then the computer. Check the version number of the router and visit linksys support and update the firmware if you have not done so. This may require you reconfigure the router. You can export the router configuration file and then import it after the update to save some time.

Yes, I did power off the computer, router and boardband modem. Reset and connect Dell desktop computer to modem directly. Power up modem, boot up computer. Desktop computer will connect to internet automatically and directly every time. Power off computer. Reconnect computer to router. Power up router. Wait for router to get Internet light green. Boot up ThinkPad laptop to test router. This X61 ThankPad will boot and connect to internet automatically every time. Boot up desktop computer, but 4 days out of the week it will automatically connect to internet. The rest of time, this desktop will not automatically connect to the internet, then, we need to open the Network and Sharing Center, and click on the red "x" mark between the Gateway and Internet to execute the "Windows Network Diagnostics" - and it will connect to the internet.

Ok. Did you check for a router firmware update? All of the versions of WRT54G have updates to the firmware. The updates fix and improve connectivity and security issues. Visit Dell support for the model of the computer and check for a network adapter driver. Click Start=>type dev => select device manager from the control panel results=>click on the + next to the network adapters=>right-clcik the ethernet network adapter and select uninstall. Then right-click Computer at the top of the list and select scan for hardware changes. That will reinstall the network adapter. Close out and reboot. Try another ethernet cable, or switch ends. Connect to a different port. When all of the hardware is updated and confirmed good, then you can begin to look at some Windows or anti-virus software settings.

Thank you Nano Warp. I check all the hardware and reboot. Same problem. I updated Cisco Linksys Firmware Version 1.02.8 for WRT54V5V6, released 2009-10-5. I check reconfirm the network card: Interlk 82566DC Gigabit Network Connection adapter at Device Manager. On the properties, under Power management, Power Saver Option: [x] Reduce Link speed during standby [x] Reduce Power if cable discounted this Wake on LAN is only has one check marks: [ ] Wake on Directed Packet [x] Wake on Magic Packet [ ] Wake on Magic Packet from power off state [ ] Wake on Link Is any of these setting may cause the non-automatic internet connection at boot?

None of those settings would cause the problem. However, I would uncheck Wake on Magic Packet if you are not remotely accessing this computer. Also, uncheck both of the power saver options, just to test. If you let the computer sleep, this will avoid any possible disconnects. Did you try another cable or switch the ends? Is the cable at least a Cat 5e specification?

OK, I removed the Power Saver options. Also removed the Wake on Magic Packet. We have purchased new cat 5 Ethernet cables and swap it. So far, no differences. We run ipconfig /all after boot and no internet connection, and compare with run Windows Network Diagnostic when connected to internet. Compare line by line, we do not see any differences. Thank you for you effort to help so far.

So, everything is ok now, let's check the network adapter. In device manager, right-click properties, driver tab, and provide the driver version. Are you using 15.5? Earlier, you posted that the network adapter is an Intel 82566 DC, Intel has this driver here, version 15.5, 7/2010. http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng If your driver is different, try the 15.5 version, reboot and test.

Actually, we check, the Intel 82566DC Gigabit Network Connection adapter driver is from Intel, driver version 9.13.41.0, driver date: March 26, 2010. This is the most recent driver available from Intel for this network LAN adapter card. We tried and re-install, and found this driver to be latest for Windows 7 from Intel.

No, 15.5 here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=18713&lang=eng Change the language if necessary at the top right.

OK, thank you. Download the Intel network adapter driver, the file PROWinx64.exe downloaded is for Windows 7 64 bits version 15.5 release date at 7-29-2010 at the Intel download center web site. After installed, in the Device Manager, Network adapters, Intel 82566DC Gigabit Network Connection properties, drivers, provider: Intel, Driver Date: 3-26-2010, driver version 9.13.41.0. In the driver file detail: the file version 9.13.41.0 built by: WinDDK, digital signer: Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility. Apparently, Intel had been releasing new network adapter download for Windows 7 quite frequently, but the actual driver installed has not changed. (I do not know what is happening). Still same problem. Sometimes it connect directly to internet, but sometimes, it does not. Right click the network icon on the status bar, started the"trouble shoot problems", it will run Windows Network Diagnostic, and will connect to internet.

OK, ipconfig /flushdns Windows IP Configuration Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache. Reboot. Still random connect and did not connect directly after boot. If no connection (the status "Network Icon" has a little yellow flag. Right click the "Network icon" on the status bar, click "trouble shoot problems", run Windows Network Diagnostic, this will connect to internet.
