In general, no. Note that the drive being compressed is quite different than the status of "supporting compression"--I.e. allowing files or folders to be compressed on the drive. If you have an older machine, with a relatively small disk drive by today's standards, this might well have been necessary--if the drive is, in fact compressed, how large is the drive, and how much free space is available on it now? A compressed drive will make the machine perform somewhat more slowly than it would without that compression--but I don't know how to characterize this--I.e. how noticeable it might be.
