chkcsk / scandisk creates 10000 chk files
Hello. I am trying to recover data from a drive for someone that ran scandisk on it. The only thing left on the drive was 10,000 .chk files. While I was able to recover some data, I'm wondering if there is something that happens once scandisk reaches the 10,000 file limit. Does it just quit, or does it blow up the disk? 1 person needs an answerI do too

There is no Scandisk in XP. Chkdsk doesn't "blow up the disk" but running it on a badly corrupted operating system disk can certainly lose data. You would need to run data recovery software on the drive at this point. R-Studio is very good. R-Studio - http://www.r-tt.com/MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Hi Malkeleah, thanks for the reply. I have used mediatools pro to recover as much data as possible. Not much left, really. What I'm concerned with is what does chkdsk do once it reaches the 10,000 file limit? Does it just quit, or can it cause more issues because it can't finish? Thanks.

I have never seen Chkdsk quit at a particular number of files. I'm not aware of any file limit and a quick Google doesn't show one. I've seen Chkdsk quit when the hard drive is bad and/or too badly corrupted. And yes, it can cause more issues because it can't finish. I never run Chkdsk without first having a good backup.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Yeah, I've checked google as well. Considering that chkdsk starts at 0 and counts up, and in this case quit at 9999 (10,000 files), that was the basis for my original question. Thanks anyway.
