DROSIA, I think banmenau was asking how / where you are trying to run chkdsk. Are you doing it from a Command Prompt, RUn Box, via the hard drive Properties dialog / Tools tab, what? Please explain exactly what you are doing.Rich Why can't I be different and original like everybody else? - Vivian Stanshal

Thanks for clarifying I ran check disk via HD Properties dialog / Tools tab and via Command Prompt as an administrator HD Properties dialog / Tools tab Via this the operation fails with “unable to open volume for direct access”, “unspecified path” plus other readings Command Prompt as an administrator Via this once I typed “chkdsk F:/r/f” and the other time “chkdsk” In the “chkdsk F:/r/f” instance it runs and gives the following: The file system is FAT32, volume F818-192C and does 2 actions Verifies Files / Folders Calculates disk space In the “chkdsk” instance it runs and gives the following: The file system is NTFS F parameter not specified, running chkdsk in read-only mode and it does the following: Verifies files Verifies Index Then it stops and gives the following: Errors found, it can not proceed in read-only mode Error: Index $130 in file 214669 is incorrectly sorted I hope this explains things somehow Thank you

What's the brand of drive? And is it possible to check the permissions on the drive itself (hopefully you have a working copy of windows you can hook into).

Hi, I would like to confirm what error message was encountered, when trying to access the volume, Access Denied or others? You may run CHKDSK commands again with Command Prompt in System Recovery Options to check if your hard disk is damaged. If Access Denied was encountered, you need to change the permission for the volume. Regards,Arthur Li - MSFT
