changeing dynamic ports
hi,
i would like change dynamic ports in w7. i can do it by NETSH i.e.:
NetSh INT IPV4 SET DynamicPort TCP Start=1024 num=65535
NetSh INT IPV4 SET DynamicPort UDP Start=1024 num=65535
i can change (like in win xp) registry key for RPC protocol, putting ports range in:
HKLM\Software\microsoft\rpc\Internet
ports
i do not know if i can configure only NTSH or i have to configure RPC or both? what if i have two different ranges in NETSH and in RCP?
in XP i configure only RCP range (there is no NETSH)
what else i have to configure to change dynamic ports range?Voytas

Hi,
You are confused with the two methods, they are two different conceptions, I would share the following articles with you to make it clear:

thx for tip and info.
i checked one scenario (w7 with disabled firewall), set RPC ports in registry 60000-61000, leave default NETSH dynamic ports range (49152 and up)
and i expected that dynamic ports started from 60000 but i can see only 491xx and up.
so i am confused. i read in posts you provided that netsh set firewall but real config of dynamic ports is in rpc registry.
and nother thing: how can i easly tests dynamic ports ?

Hi,
Dynamic ports are allowed open to this machine within the firewall,
if you want to change the range, you need use Netsh command, and you could check the result with Netsh command:

i am still confused:
1. rpc port are used on host where configured when other systems connect to?
2. dynamic ports (netsh) are used when connecting to other system (other rpc server)?

Hi,
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) dynamic port allocation is used by remote administration applications such as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Manager, Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) Manager, and so on. RPC dynamic port allocation will
instruct the RPC program to use a particular random port in specific range.
Dynamic port allocation is used to configure the dynamic port ranges being utilized by Windows built-in firewall.
Hope this makes it clear.

if rcp allocation is i.e 45678-46678
and netsh is 1024-2024
what then?
what range should i put in firewall: both? rcp?

Hi,
Based on my understanding, if you are want to control RPC communications , the RPC dynamic ports is what you need to concentrate on.
