cant access network storage device via home network but can via usb??
Hi all, I have a problem accessing my network storage device over the network but not when i connect via usb. Details: When i connect via usb it goes straight to the root folder with all file and folder access no problem When i disconnect usb and connect via my home network i can see the device as on the network but when i try to connect it says bad username or password. I am 100% sure of username and password as i can access the storage device via its web page setup. It is formatted as NTFS but on the network setup page it says it cant find it?? Although i can change any of the settings etc. I cannot do a disc check however as it says the drive is not formatted?? Any help would be very much appreciated.

It seems SMB is disabled in W7 RC, everyone seems to have that problem including myself, I did some googling :P Several ways around this, you can either use an FTP client like FileZilla (completely free) and access it that way (don't forget to add an FTP user in the NAS settings which is or should still be accessible via your preferred web browser, they are for me as it isn't SMB) Or you can configure Virtual PC and then access it via SMB like that. I only had W98 handy as I'd lent my copy of XP to a friend. http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/7061/disablew7nassmbworkarou.jpg

Read the forum posting here.Nothing is broken in win7, it just uses a more secure protocol than older linux base computers / nas boxes. The user name and password it wants is your computer login info. You should really read up on the networking is setup by default in win7...SECURE not open to allow trojans / visrus to infect network shares. The answer has been post here MANY times. You can dumb down windows to talk to the older protocol.

thanks for reply, but i dont understand which link you are referring to that answers the question MANY times!!! The login details for my computer do not still allow me to access my NAS drive so thats not the answer. If you know of anything else i could try or have the exact link then i would appreciate your help. Many thanks in advance. V

Well, with FileZilla you access your NAS via FTP, find out the IP for your NAS drive, then type the IP address into the address bar of your preferred web browser. for example the IP of my NAS drive is 192.168.1.104 so I type it in my browser as so, //192.168.1.104 then when you have accessed it as so, you may be prompted for the username and password of the NAS, go to the FTP settings page and add a user that will be used for FTP access the following image may help you. http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/5373/filezillaftp.jpg and modify what folders that FTP user account may access, and whether it is allowed to read and write files or just read them.
