hi all, this is driving me nuts . . I need to rebuild a users local profile on his windows 7 machine I can find and remove the reg entry in the profilelist with probs. However I cannot rename the profile to .old. I get an error saying the file is in use and the name cannot be changed. I have rebooted and logged in a as both local admin and domain admin, I have taken ownership and added full control to domain admin and local admin but still get the error. I need to rename the profile to .old and start again with a new profile for my user as there are issues I have spent far to long messing with now. Any suggestions would be much appreciated as I am out of ideas thanks

Boot the machine into Windows Repair Mode (by tapping F8 at boot time), then start a Command Prompt and rename the folder from there. Note that the drive letter could be C:, D: or E: but it won't be X:.

Right click computer > properties > advanced system settings > Advanced Under 'user profiles' click settings Delete from there.

Right click computer > properties > advanced system settings > Advanced Under 'user profiles' click settings Delete from there. While this might work, I think the OP's idea of renaming the profile folder is a far safer course of action. He could/should delete it after a week or two when he is sure that nothing is missing.

Did you really want to ask this question? . . . rename "c:\users\Noddy" "Noddy.bad" When you type rename /? at the Command Prompt then you will see the full syntax of the command.
