cannot join a windows 7 pc to the domain
I have my laptop on windows 7 enterprise but I am unable to join the domain in my workplace, though its able to get on the network without a hitch. Any other machine on XP here can join the same domain without a hitch. Could someone kindly assist me with a permanent solution to this. Its turning out to be very frustrating

Usually to join a domain, you simply need to make sure that the client computer's DNS settings are correct so that a Domain Controller can be located and you also need to use an account that has the appropriate rights and permissions to join the computer to the domain. What error message are you receiving? Also, I am not an expert on SBS editions, but came accross several postings which indicate that Windows 7 may have an issue joining an SBS 2008 domain which does not have Update Rollup 3 Installed. Description of Windows Small Business Server 2008 Update Rollup 3 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/969121 From the article.... --> "You cannot connect a client computer that is running Windows 7 to a Windows Small Business Server 2008-based domain. Hi, Is there any error message when trying to join the domain? If so, please post the error message here for research. Usually, the issue can occur by incorrect DNS settings as Jorge was mentioned. Please assign a static IP address and DNS address on the machine, and then join to the domain again. Before we proceed, I would like to let you know some general router IP addresses. In most cases, the router address is “192.168.1.1”, “192.168.0.1” or “192.168.18.1”. If we know the IP address of the router, please perform the following steps. 1. Click "Start", input "NCPA.CPL" (without quotation marks) and press Enter. 2. Right click on the connection that you use for the local connection, and then click "Properties". 3. Click “Continue” to verify the administrator permission. 4. Click to select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)", and then click "Properties". 5. Select “use the following IP address”. Manually set “IP address” (For example, if your router IP address is 192.168.1.1, we can type the IP address as 192.168.1.22. If the router IP address is 192.168.0.1, we should type in 192.168.0.22.) Manually set “Subnet mask” as 255.255.255.0 (Note: We can use this address as the default subnet mask.) Manually set “Default gateway” (Note: Default gateway is the IP address of the router.) Manually set “preferred DNS server” (Note: Preferred DNS server is also the address of the router.) 6. Click “OK”. Thanks, Novak

On this computer, open a command prompt and type IPCONFIG /ALL. Compare those TCP/IP settings with other computers on the network to make sure that the DNS settings are the same. Visit: anITKB.com, an IT Knowledge Base.
