phdavey, One thing to take a look at would be the DHCP Client service to make sure it's running and set it's Startup Type to Automatic. To do this go to the start menu and click run, then type services.msc then hit the OK button. Once the Services windows comes up scroll down to the DHCP Client and check its status. If it is started and set to automatic then the next thing I would do is look through the event log for any DHCP related events. Let me know how you make out.

went to DHCP client properties. startup is set to automatic, service status reads STOPPED. when i use the start button it reads: could not start the DHCP client service on local computer. ERROR 1068: the dependency service or group failed to start. NOW WHAT? by the way, i reinstalled netgear wifi in order to get a stubborn laptop in network just prior to this happening. phdavey
