cannot acces external network drive because windows stubbornly refuses to accept my username and password

My office network consists of 2 computers (windows 8.1 and Vista) and two external network drives - Maxtor 300GB. These I use for back-up. Some time ago, I noticed I could not access either external drive. This did not worry me too much in the beginning (some Windows glitch, I thought, which will simply pass), but as matters did not improve, I started looking for solutions on the Internet, which I cannot find. The problem starts like this, windows asks me for network credentials:username ad password

Although I'm 100% sure I type the right username and password, I invariably get this reply from Windows security: enter your network credentials:

no matter what I try, (I even went to reset the passwords on my external drives, to be sure there was no problem there) I never get passed this conversation with windows. It occurs on both computers, the one I've shown here is from windows 8.1, in vista it looks slightly different.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm not yet desperate, but now and then I'm getting close.....

In fact, if I could skip this network credentials stuff, I'd be quite happy.

PS: this link also shows the images Isee, which for some reason I cannot post here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_web/cannot-acces-external-network-drive-because/175f2a87-0f44-4e54-bbcf-895a8d716a3d
