can i make a domain and workgroup for the same computer ?
hey there, i want to know if its possible if i can make a computer works with a domain and a workgroup. without changing the setting each time ? the story is about this, i work in two different companies the first one has a domain but the second doesn't, if i want to do any sharing at the second company i need to get off the domain and join a workgroup and then when i return to the first company i need to get back to the domain to use printers ....etc. OS : Windows 7 Enterprise. i can share what i want with both companies, but its annoying to change that settings each time.

Hi, it is not possible. Computer must be in domain or in workgroup - it is not possible to combine these two technologies. If will have domain the same NETBIOS name as workgroup, then it will work good.

Here is another option, If you install Virtual PC on the domain joined computer, then you can create a guest machine that can particpate in the workgroup.Visit: anITKB.com, an IT Knowledge Base.

If will, have domain the same NETBIOS name as workgroup, then it will work good. if i understand you will, i should rename my workgroup the same name as my domain name? but i read before if i want to share something on a workgruop on different MS OS (xp,7) then workgroup on the machines should be the same. so that means all others should rename there workgroup name as well. correct me if i'm wrong. thank you for your response.

install Virtual PC on the domain joined computer and then connect remotely ?

my thoughts with regard to the Virtual PC was that if you have a domain joined computer (say a laptop) and you connect that laptop on a network where there is no domain, but a workgroup, rather than you changing the domain membership, just fire up a guest computer within Virtual PC that is a member of that workgroup. That way you have two computers (one in the domain and the other in the workgroup). You'll be able to share files in either scenario and keep your stuff seperate if needed.
