can't get automatic microsoft updates in vista
Please help! When i use the security centre in vista home premium to search for updates, the windows update box opens and it states that i am set to receive updates for windows only. Below this there is a link that states "get updates for more products". However, when i click on this link internet explorer opens directs to the microsoft update site where i get a screenshot advising that i should click start - all programs - windows update to receive microsoft updates and then the windows update box opens again showing exactly what it did when i opened it through the security centre. I seem to be stuck in a loop. I have tried clicking on start - all programs - windows update and the same thing happens. For some reason i cannot get windows update to include microsoft updates when it searches. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Fred

Hi Fred, Do: Start>Window Updates>Change Settings>Select: Install updates automatically (daily), Select: Include recommended updates, Select Use Microsoft Updates. Validate Windows and validate MS Office. The rest will happen automatically. Make certain to include TrustedInstaller.exe in the Trusted Zone (Kaspersky Antivirus). Andrejmart

Thank you for the response. I have followed all of the steps you gave but i do not have the option "Use Microsoft Updates" after selecting Change Settings and the "Choose how windows can install updates" window opens. The only options available after selecting "Change Settings" are: Install Updates Automatically Download Updates but let me choose.... Check for updates...... Never check for updates.... and A check box for Recommended Updates (Include recommended updates when downloading, installing, or notifying me about updates), that i have set as selected. Fred

Hi, Based on my experience, this issue is caused by something interfere Windows Update accessing process. I have resolved a similar issue before: A customer upgraded Windows Vista from Windows XP. On Windows XP, he installed Yahoo! toolbar on Internet Explorer, it worked fine. After upgrading, this customer cannot access Windows Update like you: Windows Update client opens Windows Update website, Windows Update website suggests using Windows Update client. This issue is resolved by removing all toolbars and reset Internet Explorer settings. At this time, lets troubleshoot this issue by taking following suggestions. Suggestion 1: Reload IE settings ==================== 1. Click the Start Button, type "inetcpl.cpl" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter. 2. In the Security tab, click "Delete" under "Browsing History". 3. Click "Delete all", check the option "Also delete files and settings stored by add-ons.", and then click Yes. 4. Click Close. 5. Switch to the "Advanced" tab, click the "Restore advanced settings" button and then deselect "Enable third-party browser extensions". 6. Close the IE Window and open a new IE to test this issue. Suggestion 2: Take a Clean Boot to test this issue ================== 1. Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter. 2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". 4. Restart the computer to test this issue. Note: To restore the computer to use a Normal Startup, repeat step 1 above. Then click "Normal Startup" on the General tab, click "OK", and then restart the computer. Does it works?

Hi Fred, Windows Update is a Service of Windows Explorer and not Internet Explorer. Log on as administrator. Do: Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Services>Windows Update>right click>Properties>General>Startup type Set to: Automatic (delayed Start) - Apply>Log on Set to: Local System Account Apply>Recovery>First Failure Set to: Restart the service>Dependencies make certain the supporting services are running>Back to General of Windows Update and start the service. Restart the computer>right click Windows Update> select Run as Administrator> OK the prompt If the above does not work, you can download (download, save to hard drive, and run) Windows Vista SP1 manually from: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=f559842a-9c9b-4579-b64a-09146a0ba746 Andrejmart

I logged on as an administrator and carried out the instructions, the settings already matched those you have suggested. When i reached the tab "Dependencies" - Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and DCOM Server Process Launcher were listed, and i assume these are the supporting services that you refer to. I restarted my pc and it has made no difference. I already have SP1 installed on my pc, are you suggesting that i reinstall it or did you suggest this not knowing if i already had it? Basically the Update Service and checkbox for "Use Microsoft Updates" seems to be missing from the update options window. How frustrating. Fred

Hi Fred The current version of wucltux.dll is 7.0.6001.1800 dated 2008-01-19 3:37 am. Search for this file on the C drive and verify its property. What kind of anti-virus you have and is it up to date (minute). Have patience. Andrejmart

Hello, I searched for this file on my C drive andfound 4 wucltux.dll files(plus afurther 4 number fileswith the file name wucltux.dll.mui), i have only listed the file versions andfolder locations of thewucltux.dll filestogether with the date shown on the "details" tab afterselecting properties of each file:- File Version 7.0.6000.381 - C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-windowsupdateclient-ui_31bf3856ad364e35_7.0.6000.381_none_15ca3cbecbcdd6dd (2008-03-15 17:00 pm) File Version 7.0.6001.18000 - C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-windowsupdateclient-ui_31bf3856ad364e35_7.0.6001.18000_none_1dfffcd8d48464b1 (2008-01-19 08:37 am) File Version 6.0.6000.16386- C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-windowsupdateclient-ui_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_2a58be974cb2ab0e (2006-02-11 10:46 am) File Version 7.0.6001.18000 - C:\Windows\System32 (2008-01-19 08:37 am) In terms of the properties for each of the 4 files - Under the General tab it states that the files open with an "Unknown Application", neither box is checked alongside attributes and therefore the filesarenot hidden or marked as read only. Under the Security tab the "System, Administrators and Users" only have "Read & Execute and Read" permissions. Trusted Installer has the full range of permissions except for "Special Permissions" I have McAfee Security Centre / Anti Virus and it is up to date. Fred.

Hi Fred, It appears that some Windows Vista updates prior to installation of SP1 were not installed or SP1 was not installed properly. Download, save, and install Microsoft Baseline Security Analyze 2.1. Run the MBSA by using advance setting. Check Check for security updates, Check Configure computer for Microsoft Update and scanning prerequisite, Check Advance Update Service option, Check Scan using Microsoft Update only. Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.1 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/mbsa2_1/default.mspx In the Windows Scan Results of the scan look for Incomplete Updates. Andrejmart

Hi, I downloaded and ran the analyzer, with no security updates missing for:- Office Security Updates SQL Server Security Updates Silverlight Security Updates Windows Security Updates According to this even my Microsoft Updates are up to date, or could this just be so because there haven't been any recent Microsoft Updates since my Update Service disappeared? Fred

Hi, I ran the Security Analyzer again only this time with "check for windows administrative vulnerabilities" checked and received a scan result stating that i had an incomplete update (a previous software update installation was not completed. you must restart your computer to finish the installation). When i review my update history i do have some failed updates but these were subsequently installed as successful and i have no pending updates requiring a restart. Fred

Hi Fred, Open Management Tool>Reliability and Performance>Reliability and review the history of installed Windows updates. Some updates were pre-requirement prior to installation of SP1. Those updates must be installed prior to installation of SP1. Assuming that they are installed by now try-reinstalling SP1. andrejmart

Hi, I reinstalled SP1 but this still did not work. Finally i decided to restore my laptop to its factory condition which was not a major issue as i have not had it for long andperforming this operation did not replace all my personal files as i have these on a seperate drive to the OS.I now have everything working just fine. I did notice that there are 2 updates that areprerequisites tothe installation of SP1 and949939was missing and should be installed before 937287, which i did have. How it was not installed on my pc i don't know as i get my windows updates through automatic updates. I would recommend to anybody that is having update issues that they double check what updates they already have installed. Anyway, thank you for your advice and attempts to resolve the problem. Fred
