can't change network settings
Hello all! So this seems pretty simple, i have done it 100 times or more in XP. I skipped the whole Vista craze and settled in with windows 7. I have the wired network adapter disabled, so I'm only using wireless. My wireless network adapter is updated and working fine. My network is fine, my routers on fine. Right now I'm working off of my old Win XP computer. I'm a programmer, working with a program that I have to give my laptop a static IP address. I need to control that address. So here are my steps. First of all here is what i get for ip config. Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : linksys.com Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-24-D6-02-41-6A DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.100.132(Preferred) Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Wednesday, November 25, 2009 10:05:26 PM Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Wednesday, December 02, 2009 9:16:35 PM Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.100.100 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.100.100 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.254 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled So now, if I go to control panel, network and sharing, change adapter settings, Properties of wireless network connection and properties of IPv4 address. There I can turn off DHCP, and type in a static IP address and gateway and DNS. So I save that info. Then when I renew and release the IP config, I get a 169 address. I go back to where I changed the properties of the IP address, and all of my fields are blank. How come it will not save my static IP address. Thanks! Rudy

I dont use static addresses but I wonder if you need to also set Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6). It will not cause any harm if you do set it.

Please temporary disable the antivirus. If the issue still occurs, it should be the driver issue. Although the driver is the latest it may be not compatible for Windows 7. If you would like to fix the IP address, you may configure it in the DHCP server as a workaround.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Hi Guys! Burr, IPv6 has the same issue. Arthur, i did disable the antivirus. I actually uninstalled it, and disabled the windows firewall, etc. This laptop is only a couple of months old, Windows 7 ready, so I think the driver is still good. But I can try and roll it back. I also have the same problem when I enable the network card, and disable the wireless card. Any other thoughts? Thanks! Rudy

RudyHere are 2 straw-clutchers, which you may or may not have tried:1. Switch off and unplug the computer/router/modem. Wait five minutes, plug it back in and when all the lights stabilise, start the computer. 2. It could be that Winsock is corrupted, read this XP/Vista article http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811259

Hey Burr! Thanks for the tips! I tried the first one, no go. The second one looks interesting, I'll check that out. If anything, it's good to know that Windows 7 did not take away the ability to use static IP address, that it's just me. I report back later! Thanks! Rudy

Hey Guys! Ok! I got it to work! For now. Still have to try some other test. But I do have a static IP address, and I'm on the wireless network, and on the internet. The thing that I seemed to get to work is to Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP. Before, I always left it to default. It says right on the control to use ENABLE if your using static IP address. I might have saved myself alot of trouble if I would read the tips from microsoft once in awhile. LOL Thanks for all the help and effort! Rudy
