Antivirus programs install low-level drivers. Apparently the ones from CA Security caused the problem. Can you get into Safe Mode? Repeatedly tap the F8 key as the computer is starting. This will get you to the diagnostic menu where you can choose Safe Mode. If Safe Mode doesn't work you can try Last Known Good Configuration from the same diagnostic menu but this is unlikely to help with a bad driver. If you are able to get into Safe Mode, you may be able to uninstall CA Security. Many programs won't uninstall in Safe Mode, however but it is worth a try. If you can't uninstall it, try clean-booting the computer so you can get back into Regular Mode and do the uninstall from there.Clean boot in Windows XP -http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353Clean-boot advanced troubleshooting in Windows XP -http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316434However, with a used computer the very first thing to do is a clean install of Windows. You can contact Dell to get an installation disc and this will be well worth the expense. It is important to have reinstallation media because, as you have sadly found out, Stuff Happens. After you get things sorted, don't install CA Security again. A better choice is ESET NOD32 (commercial) or Avast Free.Dell - Request Backup Discs - http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dellcare/en/backupcd_formI don't know how useful they will be but you could also contact CA Security tech support.http://www.ca.com/us/support.aspxMS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
