bitlocker issues --- operating system reinstall lost recovery key-- help!
ok, so almost a year ago i bought a SeaGate 500GB external HDD. i copied alot of my files to it incase i needed them as a back up. i have never had any issues with the bitlocker system before. and a month or 2 ago, bitlocker would not allow me to open my drive, it was like it wasnt there, i could see the drive, it just wouldnt let me unlock it. i tried many things to figure it out. i kind of gave up on it, figuring i would eventually find a way to unlock it. recently [ not even a week ago ], i got a new laptop running 7 Ultimate 64-bit, and out of curiosity i plugged my drive in to see what would happen. the bitlocker info came up and said i needed my encryption key to unlock the drive. it wouldnt let me put in my password, and i cant figure out why. and i dont have my recovery key anymore. it was in My Documents on my old laptop running 7 Ultimate 32-bit. and it seems to have dissapeared. bitlocker wont let me open my drive without the key. and i dont know how i can get the drive to go back to where i can enter my password. any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Samberg6160. More info: My old laptop that originally had the key was a Compaq Presario CQ-60 [ Win7 ultimate 32-bit] my new laptop is a Compaq Presario CQ-56 [Win7 Ultimate 64-bit] Also: the drive is a Seagate FreeAgent. 500GB

You can also use manage-bde from elevated command prompt. >manage-bde -unlock d: -pw where d is the drive letter. enter and it will tell you to enter the password if it is for data drive. For OS drive, >manage-bde -unlock d: -rp "xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxx" xxxxx-xxxxx- is the 48 digit recoery password. >manage-bde -protectors -get d: will give you list of protectors for your volume. Manoj Sehgal i will try to unlock it that way and see if it works. =] hopefully it does. all of my backup and everything is on that drive! thanks guys for the answers! i appreciate it very much! =] Samberg6160 6-1-11: i tried the <manage-bde -unlock (drive letter) as well as the other options in cmd prompt to unlock my drive. when i do the <manage-bde -unlock (drive letter) it tells me in cmd prompt to enter the password for my drive. and when i try to type it in, it doesnt type anything. and i typed the password in a txt document, and copied it, then tried to paste it in cmd but no luck. is there any other way i can input my password in cmd to open my drive so i can decrypt it so i never have these issues again? Thanks! Samberg6160

On Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise Edition ->We have BitLocker drive Encryption in Control Panel, which if you have can use to unlock the drive and enter the password. On Win7 Home Premium, WIn7 Professional edition, you can still open windows explorer and unlock the drive where we give you a GUI screen to type the password. Open windows explorer and then select the drive which you want to unlock and right click and select unlock drive. Type in the correct password to unlock the drive. If you are typing a wrong password or have lose the password, then you can unlock the volume using 48 digit recovery password which we ask a user to save on other USB device before we start the encryption. I hope this works for you. Manoj Sehgal
