antivirus startup for windows 7 professional
I recently updated from Vista to Windows 7 Professional. Recently, I have been getting messages from the action center telling me to turn my antivirus on. I have been using the avast! antivirus on my cpu. avast! has a round blue icon with the letter "a" that is positioned in the system tray that rotates to let the user know that it is working. Also, when updates are made, a voice actuated prompt tells users verbally that it has been updated. I can see the icon rotating and hear when the antivirus has been updated but the action center still tells me to turn on my antivirus. I'm confused. Is there something turning my antivirus off because there is a bug or is the action center correct in telling me to turn it back on? After I click on the "turn on now" link it still does not seem to come on because the action center message is still there. Can anyone help me determine what is going on with my cpu?

Dal D,Witch version of Avast anti virus are you using? Are your anti virus definitions up to date (not older then 3 days)? It is possible that you use an old version of your antivirus or that the version you have is incompatible with action center.Intresting article for you that can explain why you have this issue:http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/windowssecurity/archive/2009/05/06/upcoming-action-center-changes-for-security-vendor-software.aspxPlease give me some more info.Kind RegardsDFTIM me - TWiTTer: @DFTER

Hi, Daft is correct. This issue can occur if the virus definition is not updated or the antivirus program is incompatible with Windows 7. I suggest you download the most recent signature file from the antivirus vendor and upgrade the virus definition. Meanwhile, to eliminate the system cause, you can download Microsoft Security Essentials and install it instead for a test. Thanks, Novak

I am using Norton internet security 2010. Most times the action center is correct - identifiying that it is on and up-to-date. Sometimes it does identify that I have not used the machine for a few days and there is need to update the defs. For the last few days however, while NIS is on and up-to-date, the Action Center says that NIS is off (even though NIS says it is on by looking at the systray and popping up the user interface). clicking on the 3 items (malware, AV, firewall) and asking Win 7 to turn them onnothing happens. Still red flags on AC and NIS still with green check mark. Only way restore is to reboot! Any suggestions as to how to trouble-shoot besides MSE? TIA, Jay

I think that the problemis with the avast! program.Avast! released a new software (not database) update and avast! is now version 5 and orange and not blue.please update your Avast! software.

I think his problem probably is Avast 5..........Avast 5 is a buggie mess....it used to be the best antivirus...but the new version is a mess.....everyone I know running win 7 has gone back to Avast 4.8....it will be supported for a while yet....some have moved on to the new Microsoft antivirus. Stay away from Avast 5 for a while...it shouldn`t have even been released yet....it is a mess and is probably behind OP`s problem..........Peter
